Strange that: his profile describes him as a man, yet he got the QOM. His only claim to fame seems to be that he is at the end of the first page of results for that segment. I'd wager it's some quirk on Strava's end which has led to him being crowned, as there are no female efforts recorded for that segment.

Ryan Sherlock has ruined strava, can't even get within 10 km/h of some of his segments!

There should be some sort of pro/amateur/snail leaderboard system.

Well you can break it down by age and weight....

are you going to give me a nice KOM for that?

Just go for the segments where he has just strolled through.

No. This is cycling. It's meant to be hard. ;)

There is hard, then there is Ryan Sherlock.

Glad we have very little cyclists using Strava down this end of the country. :D

Word on the street is that due to Ryan's skill level the times he posts are done on a unicycle..

It's nice to have an accurate picture of the possibilities of a climb.

I was looking at a climb used in the Rás last year, and there was one guy who'd gone up it (not in the Rás) a full two minutes faster than any of the pro riders. I looked him up, and he was a good climber, but not that good. Flagged the ride, NO REGRETS!

That doesn't seem fair unless you know that the pros were going full bore. Maybe the bunch rode tempo on the climb.

I don't skimp on my research. I looked up the individual involved - well outside the top ten of the nat. hill champs that year, and he finished behind me in a race up the same climb around the same time period as the flagged ride (he was obviously on a recce). Now, maaaaaybe he rode up the hill faster in training (~9'30") than he did in the race (~13'00"), but that seems unlikely to me.

The Rás lads were described as "completely lined out" and "straining". Now, reckon you could give me the benefit of the doubt? :)

Have a segment I'm suspicious about myself. A few racing cyclist doing a lot of hard miles are way behind a guy averaging 70km a week.
It's a flat segment, it near Cork city and popular with clubs.
Yet this lad did it solo. To flag or not.....

I would only flag if it's clear to me that the journey was done in a car. Sometimes conditions are absolutely perfect and on the flat that can easily get you a load of KOMs. One commute last year I had a tailwind of 44kph, and my total commute was 10% faster than I have ever achieved on any other commute. I picked up a load of KOMs which are 4kph or so faster than the next fastest rider - they are all completely genuine though

As Beasty says, the wind can have a massive impact. Check what way it was blowing on the day?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭ford2600

I won't flag it, strong wind. But it was a strong wind for other guys to...

Finished part of return leg in car, something fishy.. I'll have a chance to ride with him in a months time, we'll see then

Seems awful sad if he is cheating.

Just checked he averaging less than 50 km/week!

I know some (very fast) guys who only put their faster rides up

Is Strava clever enough to record wind data for a particular day? Would it be that difficult to get it to query a meteorological database and overlay it on the map?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭spyderski

There's so many variables it can be hard to spot cheat rides, unless they're the ones with 80kph average speeds!. The other week I took my TT bike out and got a KOM near my front door, as the wind was perfect. I got a time around 6km/h faster than anyone else on there - looks too fast, but on TT bike with a strong tailwind it was actually easy enough.

Also, as Beasty said, lots of people don't upload all their rides to Strava (me included!).

But what benefit would that provide? Do you end up with "wind adjusted" times?

There are some stretches that can catch the wind completely differently - I know of "funnels" made of trees where a slight change in wind direction can change a strong tailwind into a strong headwind. Wind at 10m height can be very different than wind at ground level. Some climbs are very sheltered. There are so many variablse that to try and include something about the wind could be pretty meaningless

Regardless of that, I always record the wind speed and direction on my commuting spreadsheet;)

I sometimes get a clue when I see their ride takes a turn onto the M1 ;)

Nah no wind adjusted times. Just an overlay of the general wind direction in the area of the segment on the day of the KOM.

    Just for clarity.

If only there were some other way, with less variables, for people to measure themselves against each other? Like everyone riding the same segment, on the same day, at the same time?

We can't all commute to work the same way. You'll have to come up with a new plan.

Maybe we could do it at the weekends. ;)

With everyone taking their turn at the front of course..

    We're all racing ...

Actually one feature I do use is to check all my own times on certain segements. There's one where I have 10 rides faster than no. 2 in the list which gives particular pleasure
