cassette chewing up the hub - advice needed

I took off my cassette to give it a good clean and was a bit surprised to see the cogs have been chewing up the splines on the hub. I have an ultegra 6700 ten speed cassette - has anyone any advice on what to do to about this? can the spline unit be replaced (is it even a separate part)?

Common problem, the metal on the hub is softer than on the cassette - put some grease on the splines, replace the cassette on the wheel and forget about it! Really nothing else you can do as far as I know!

Free hub bodies are cheap and easy to replace.

Take a weight penalty and replace with a steel freehub body if you can get one for your brand of hub when the time comes to replace.

thanks for the info. I've done a bit of searching but I'm coming up blank on any how to guides to remove and replace the freehub body. do you need special tools? how bad would you let it get before replacing?

Lets be honest, you've not looked very hard have you?

and following on from bad tunney/good tunney there is also a chance that your cassette may not be firmly held by the lock ring. There is often a spacer required between the cassette and the freehub and if that is missing no amount of tightening the lockring will tighten the cassette. In this case the cassette can rock on the freehub body and cause wear.

As well as ensuring you have the necessary spacers, make sure the lockring is tightened to the specified torque. This will ensure that the load (from pedalling) is transmitted sideways across the cassette/freehub and not just through one pinion.

In terms of how to remove the freehub, it really depends on what hub you have. It shouldn't be difficult to do, but will only be required if you actually need to replace it. As CP3O said, apply some grease and ensure the cassette is properly fitted to the correct torque. After that there is nothing else to do!

What is the advantage of greasing the splines? It's not a moving part or am I missing something obvious?

Just so that the cassette doesn't get stuck onto the freehub - they can sometimes be a nightmare to get off!
