    Hi all.

I have set up my motorized dish for the first time today. I have a basic satellite finder. i was getting a strong buzzing noise and picked up a few foreign stations. I have basic free to all box. Nothing great just one that i picked up on my local electronic store its a telves . I then wanted to get a stronger signal. The buzzing noise from the sat finder just stop and no matter what i did the signal was not change. i was just stuck at 17 percent. i moved the satellite to find anything but nothing. i couldn't even get the old station that i pick up. i am not sure what i did. i try to retrace my step to see what i did.

when i got the first station i mess around with the box. i was going through the frequencies by mistake i added a new satellite not sure what this does. after that i started to move the satellite to get a better signal. nothing i have done afterwards has got any signal back.

i am flashing my other box dreambox 500s with the Commando_14-7 snd i am hope that this box will help.
Can a dream box pick up fta station. will this work the same as the one the other box.

i am not sure if it is the box or if its me moving the satellite.

    I live in dublin.

any help would be very grateful.

    thanks

What steps have you taken so far in setting up this motorised dish?

    What instructions did you follow?

made sure the polo was Aline and straight.
put the motor and dish facing south. i used a compus.
made sure the the latitude was 53 on the motor. live in tallaght that was the latitude that i was told to use.
i attache the wire from the lmb to the sat finder and the other one end to the box.
when they where attached i moved the satellite to make the the sat finder buzz and get a signal of 99. then i went to the box went through the frequency to see which satellite that i had picked up. got a signal of about 69 percent on the box and the channels on the freq. picked some crazy stations. so foreign bbc station and some Spanish and Arabic station. i think the freq was hot bird. not really sure.after that i did something with the box and went out move to satelite around and then nothing. every thingi did i got nothing. not buzzing, not change in sat signal. was not getting any strong signal. move the dish around.i could nothing. back to box nothing. have just flash my dream box. will that pick up fta and maybe i can start again.

i tried it again with the dream box and got a response on the sat finder. end up getting a few station but still can't find any astra 2 freq. what is the best way to find the astra 2 so i can pick up the fta station.

The instruction manual for the motor should tell you what dish elevation angle to use.

With USALS motor control, it's just a matter of entering co-ordinates on the setup screen, driving the dish to any satellite position then actually aligning the dish/motor assembly on the satellite in question. The motor will then automatically find the position of all satellites on the arc.

Some recommend using a satellite at the top of the arc (as close to due south as possible) for this alignment, others say you'll get better tracking using satellites more towards the extremes. It makes sense to start as you had done, by aligning near due south with the motor in its central position.

Can't help you with how your particular receiver handles all this.

i have got in the free view stations. i have a signal strength of about 79 percent.is this strength high enough. or do i need to fine tune it. i have not set up the motor setting yet that is the next part. .

There's no point aligning on a satellite, unless the motor has been driven to that position. If by "free view", you mean the likes of BBC & ITV, then you should have 1st selected the 28 degrees east position as the satellite you wanted to view.

I will reword my previous post so it makes a bit more sense.

Don't forget, the motor won't move unless the cable from the receiver is connected to it & then on to the lnb.

As mentioned already, if you have the correct elevation for your latitude set on the motor mount, the recommended dish elevation figure & the dish properly centred on the motor shaft, alignment with USALS should be straightforward: some rotation of the motor on the pole and/or tweaking of the dish elevation.

This article recommends aligning on a satellite towards the eastern or western edges of the available arc.

There is one thing that i dont understand. what is Declination. just dont understand it.

Declination is the angle the dish needs to be turned down from the motor polar axis (which you set with the latitude scale) so that it is elevated properly for the highest point of the arc (due south).

Most manuals for motors give an elevation figure that can be set using the markings on the dish, without you having to work it out from declination & angle of bend in the motor arm.
