I just switched from Vodafone to UPC today and then got the email.

"Up to" 70 MBs and no confirmed date.

I'm quite a distance from the nearest cabinet so I'm going to stick with confirmed speeds. Who knows what the delivered speed will be with congestion and copper between me and the cabinet..

Got this in follow up email after registering my interest...

"With Vodafone, next generation broadband is simple. It's our guarantee that you'll get the fastest speed your line can handle - it's broadband as it should be."

Now, recently my speeds have been spiking to 17mb/s for 30 seconds or so, but wonder why mention the land line if it's supposed to be Fibre?

I'd say they are referring to the Fibre To The Cabinet areas, which is the majority of the country. There is'nt a hope in hell that Eircom will have fibre-cabled to the home the rest of the country this side of 2020.:mad:

its still a land line to your home, fibre wont be coming direct to your home i am afraid,

I got a call about Simply Broadband today.
I live about 10 miles outside Galway, got rid of landline and went with Meteor dongle & hotspot. Cheaper but internet speed is very unreliable.
I'm thinknig of going for this deal, the fact that they install a landline for the broadband should guarantee good connection speed.

Anone know offhand what the price (€29.99 pm) is like compared to other providers?

It's the cheapest landline based broadband you're gonna get. Make sure you can actually avail of the €29.99 rate though, it's only available in certain areas.

Heya. I received a email about this the other day (Since I am a Vodafone @ Home customer), and I just want to ask (Probably early days yet, but), will I actually be able to get it?

They did works some time ago (Nearly 2 years at this stage) where they put fibre or something down but it's about less than half a mile away from my house.

Any help would be appreciated? Thanks

Everybody is going to be getting Fibre to the Cabinet which is then copper cable the rest of the way.

The only places that can get fibre to the home are from the trial which are Dundrum, Sandyford and Wexford. - check the eircom website

FTTC uses VDSL so if you can get it, you are going to be a max of 1 - 1.5 KM from the cabinet. This means you will get 10 meg or so. #fingerscrossed

This is all dependent on the quality of the line how it was installed etc.

For a lot of customers, its going to make a big difference to their connection.

A mate of mine had a pretty crappy 4 meg connection. Now has over 10 meg and loving it.

I just checked that. Monaghan is in Phase 4 and I am about 1935m from the Monaghan 'exchange'. I don't know how much that will affect me, but hopefully I can still get decent speeds (Up and Down, especially UPload)

Click here and then click the "Coverage Map" on the right side of that page and it should allow you to see phases.

your not, when you go to link look to the side and click on NGA coverage map, then you will see the phases, click on one and a menu appears etc. You will need to know your exchange as well so you may have to use big map to zoom in. just experiment it becomes clear as you click around.

i have checked for you and you are claregalway exchange and phase 5. drove that road manys the time

I had a look at the map showing an indication of the phases ....... and wonder about those exchanges which are not listed ..... are they ever going to be fibre-enabled or will there be more 'phases' after those listed?

Anyone know?

Just for clarification Vodafone will have nothing to do with this "fibre roll out" it's all eircom work and Voda will just be reselling it. Also it's not really a "fibre roll out" either, it's just extending the exchange facilities nearer to you from the local cabinet. A fibre rollout implies (in my mind anyway) a Fibre to the Home deployment which this most certainly not.

It's like saying Ballydehob is motorway powered because the motorway goes to Cork:)

That's the million dollar question...logically you would expect more phases just like the ADSL rollout but then eircom are nearly bankrupt so nobody knows what will happen in the near future.

What utter rubbish. It's going to deliver 100Mbs within months to part of the population and over time to 1.2 million. You won't get anything like that percentage in large parts of the states. Some people talk through their hoops on this forum.

100Mbs in places like castlebar, ennis etc is way ahead of a lot of other regional locations in comparative countries, If you knew anything about it you'd know this is a robust technology that's standing up well in the trial, delivering excellent stable speeds over good distances from the cab, you're another hurler on the ditch talking through your hoop

and so you're point is that whatever is posted here is representative of an over 400 million euro technology rollout programme? reality check time, this is a massive technology rollout that has little concern for boards.ie, it's mostly idle conjecture here that the real technologists who plan the programme ignore completely

I have a sneaking suspicion that you may be a tiny bit disappointed when the rollout begins. Running fibre to the cabinet is not by any stretch of the imagination a massive technology rollout and 400 million is small beans. Have you any idea how far most of ireland is behind in relation to broadband.. All this work should and could have been done years ago. Then it would have been massive. This is the usual piecemeal approach.

As an aside how do you know there are real technologists involved in the roll out?

Really do you have a reference for that from eircom preferably a technical source and not some marketing nonsense?

Sure it's a massive improvement over current technologies but it's still a stopgap measure so it's not a massive "leap forward".
This is "old hat" technology as other countries have implemented FTTC years ago we are merely catching up.

It may deliver 100Mb/s when they implement vectoring but afaik and from reading the eircom reference manuals there's no vectoring included in this rollout yet.

Are you saying that when eircom say the max they can deliver is 70Mb/s at a distance of 300 metres that they wrong and you know better?
