My passport is about to expire in August 2013, less than 6 months. I am applying to the embassy in Canberra for renewal. Do I need to post just a photocopy of my existing passport, or do I have to post the actual passport itself??

Thanks in advance for any help!

I sent mine off last year with my passport. I am pretty sure you cannot send a photocopy.

That's what I thought but why does it say here (http://www.embassyofireland.au.com/home/index.aspx?id=80713) that it should be photocopy??

Original documents and/or previous passport as specified on the notes accompanying your application form. First time adult applicants and applicants following loss or theft should pay particular attention to the additional ID requirements. If your passport has been lost or stolen you must report this to the police and send a copy of the police acknowledgement to us with your application.
