Hey Guys, my project is 1535 words in length and I've tried to shorten it as much as I can. Will I lose marks for being 35 words over? =/

To be fair you could do a project on Micheal Collins's dog.

Yeah Collins is a bit of an overused topic, try a unique aspect of his life, maybe his involvement in 1916 since he didn't have a huge role, his time in jail after, or maybe even his funeral, it was huge :P

I doubt they will go through and count every word, so I wouldn't say so. At the same time, you never know so it may be beneficial to go through it one more time.

My project is around 1800, and the teacher said it'll be fine, so you should be grand also.

Ok, thanks. Also, is the review counted in the 1500 word limit?

I'm thinking about doing Drug (Amphetamine in particular) use in WW2, is that too broad? Should I focus on the Nazi's use or the Allies use, or both? Thoughts?! :)

Edit: Struggling to find any books dedicated to the subject on either Google Books or Amazon which seems really unusual to me as their are plenty of websites with pages of information on the topic... If anyone is able to find a book (or even a documentary) on Drug Use of Soldiers (particularly Nazi soldiers) in WWII I would be super grateful..

Edit2: Decided I'm going to do mine on Amphetamine use by Nazis (including Hitler). Cannot find a book with more than a paragraph about Nazi soldiers drug use so I've decided I'm going to use This website + about half of this website in conjunction with this documentary about Hitlers drug use. If I use something as a basis for information but don't include it as a source would that be okay?

Hi. My project is about 2500 words, and I don't have a clue how to shorten it. Does anyone know if they actually mark you down for having too many words. I'd be really afraid that I'd get penalised.

Really? Are you sure because my essay is 1540 words and there's no possible way that I could shorten it. =/

No, I'm in 6th year. I've written everything into my booklet except my review.

No the examiner wouldn't count that many words they only really have the word length there to cut out people from waffling and being lazy. It would be noticable if it was maybe 200 words off the length. 40 words is fine however i'm not too sure about some who's projects are 2000+ words

But that's 1540 without the review part. Are you guys sure that the review is part of the 1500 word limit?

Hi. I'm just starting my project and I want to do something on the writer Flann O'Brien. He's one of Irelands greatest writers and in my opinion criminally under-appreciated. I've no idea what aspect to take and how to make it relevant. Maybe I could do it about the impact Cruiskeen Lawn had during the war or could do something about literary censorship. Any ideas?

How do I use my sources?Do I just copy and paste from them?Any tips for writing the rsr?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 608 ✭✭✭BrownBear11

    Well Ricky

For your sources you don't need to quote massive chunks from them because that just uses up words and, trust me, you're going to need them all. Just quote whenever necessary but do it briefly. Something along the lines of "The level of available resources was poor, as detailed in Documentary X, with one witness describing how "there was 1 ambulance for every 20 injured people"". That would be enough of a quote. Just use them briefly and intertwine them into the essay.

This was a big help for me. It takes you through each section very well, I think, so following it helped me loads

Get back to me if there's anything more I can help you with (no promises :p)

EDIT - Here's the practice booklet so it help you see what's required in terms of space and the amount of words needed and all that kind of thing before you actually write it into your official booklet

hey one more thing, Is the 1500 words just for the essay or does the evaluation of sources count as a part of the 1500 words?

The word count is just for your extended essay and review of process

Is anyone doing a project on an Irish literary figure. Don't know how to go about doing a project involving culture

If you've no idea where to cut talk to your class teacher, they're supposed to guide you, I handed up my project at least 3 or 4 times for my teacher to read through. She just told me stuff like that I needed more detail on x, that y was irrelevant, my conclusion needed work etc. They're really the best people to ask as they know from an exam point of view what is required, well they should anyway!

Also re:Word count, 2000+ is way too much and it will be obvious when you write it out that it's too long, our teacher says you don't get penalised unless you go over 1,600 but that they're pretty savage after that, 10 marks for every 100/200 you're over? Like 1599 words is 'okay' but a touch dodgy.

With a week to go he picked the title 'Origin of the rolling stones'
He said its alright but im worried and don't think it has any historic relevance

Hey guys, I did 'The successes and failures of revolutionary Catalonia'. I'm unsure about how wordcount works, this is what I'm at now:

    Extended essay: 1700
    Outline Plan: 277
    Evaluation of sources: 600
    Review of Process: 495.

I'm having serious trouble making the essay more concise, my first draft was nearing 4000 words.

You need to shorten that by a lot...
600 words for the evaluation is about 200-300 too many. You have one page for it.
Extended essay + Review being 2200 words is about 700 words too many. We were advised to do 1200 on the essay and 300 on the review (or 1300 on the essay and 200 on the review.)

My history teacher says that examiners despise essays that are extremely long and they penalize heavily.

On our rsr booklet at the front it has the amount of words in your extended essay only to put in. It doesn't include the word count of the entire booklet just the essay itself
