Ideas- 10k 1.8 SUV or equivalent?

Hi all,

Looking for the unicorn of vehicles here- some sort of SUV variant, 1.8/9, petrol or diesel, preferably 2008 on but I'm open to anything from 2005 on. Any ideas, advice, insight, links would be welcome.

10k is the budget but again, all suggestions welcome. Fingers crossed,because my eyes are from looking and looking...and looking!

MPV might be a better bet with that size engine as full size SUV are poor on MPG and usually have need the bigger engines.

The first questions are what exactly do you need the vehicle for and do you need four wheel drive?

Daily commuting and up and down to Sligo from Dublin with a lot of tools/gear every so often. Need a fair amount of space to pack stuff in. 2 wheel drive is fine though.

So will the car be used for the school run or something else that you think you need a SUV? What I am trying to get at is do you really need a SUV type vehicle because SUVs that fit your criteria are few and far between.

It's the space that I need as well as the height advantage for getting an elderly person in and out of. It's basically the only car ill be running so it has to cover a multitude. I know I'm asking the impossible!

I'd look at a decent size estate car too, it will be alot more comfortable doing that daily mileage than a SUV.

for long runs a diesel would make most sense
I think a estate car or a MPV, that gives you lots of choices to find something you like.

The MPV will be slightly better on space allowing for bigger loads with back seats folded down. So it depends on what your carrying.

I wouldn't recommend any of the SUV because although they can do the job well the fuel costs will quickly add up. I have a Jeep and 2 liter car both diesel
car will run up from Dublin to Cork and back on a 1/3 of a tank the Jeep needs the full tank. I like driving the jeep but I also like to keep a few bob in my pocket.

It's not even that I'll be doing a Sligo run daily, or even commuting daily but I definitely need space, low tax/emissions/ SUV height. The estates are economical but it's essential that the car itself is easy to get into.Id even sacrifice economy for ease of access. I don't need wheelchair accessibility or anything but something that's too low is just not a goer.

Yea I agree. But they aren't the type of cars you buy for beauty. They must be so practical!
I'd have one in a head beat to be honest, between bikes, canoes, surf board and weekend run to DIY store, I can really see the benifits.

Guys, thanks a million for all the suggestions- I'm thinking the quashqai or the vitara or the rav. They're my options. Any insight as to a good year on any of those models? There's a good few 08's around. I don't even want to think about the tax but it can't be any worse than paying for the heap of ****e Freelander I have at the moment. Unbelievable.
