lads and lassies be careful, as i said over weekend neighbour had 3 calves stolen from shed last week and another shed they tried to get into but lad had left bales across doors in the passage way, so they slashed his tractor tyres and fcuked off

The forecast is giving it warmer from the weekend for 10days and possibly returning to the current cool weather after that

ya mind saying how much and rough weights? We always put some condition on the culls before letting them off.

Shattered now also, tb testing this morning and put out more calves and weanlings in the afternoon, animals are hard work, won't complain next time I'm stuck in the tractor for the day. Milking still to be done also ugh!

Had to get the vet out for a lambing. A hog get with ring womb and a big lamb. Unfortunately vet couldn't get it out either so had to cc it. Lamb was dead and ewe doesn't look great either.
Can't complain though as generally going pretty hassle free.

Had to get a section done on a ewe a few weeks ago. Got the bill there the other day - 90euro + VAT, so 102euro, plus 16euro for antibiotic injection.

By the time you take feeding the ewe through preg and then through lactation and then the lamb itself into account your at a loss with a single lamb even if it does survive to be slaughtered .
    Whats the alternative though ....
Hows the lambing going for you now John , has it evened out after the shakey start ???

Its a long way from Wicklow but the trade wasn't bad in Manorhamilton yesterday. The place was flooded with cull cows, unusual in suckler country this time of year.
    Black/white simx 700kg 1240e
    lim x cow/heifer 560kg 1360e
    fr holstein type 610kg 705e

Other stock held up well, quality was mixed. saw one nice lim heifer 1 year old 360kg 1100e
another biggish type but nice sort for making a cow 400kg 1120e
    Very fancy lim/bbx 520kg 1420e
some sweet little ch weanling heifers weighing about 220kg were selling between 550-600e they looked like value to me.

Well, the vet pulled two very dead lambs out of that ewe, so a total loss...
Like you say tho, what else can you do.

Lambing is nearly over now, just 2 left to go.

Once it started in earnest it went ok, one ewe had two more dead lambs, but she pulled through... Excluding the abortions at the start, it wasn't too bad a lambing to be fair...

The lab didn't find anything in the lambs they tested. I had similar issues last year, although not as bad... But the thought of next year, the first half dozen or so the same again next year is playing on my mind a bit... :(

    How's things going for you?

There very slow lambing this year .
Started a week ago , but havent really got a burst of them yet . And to be honest they can take their sweet time , and the longer the better IMO , because like everyone else i have very little grass and Im trying to compensate with extra meal .

Iv two pallets of pasture sward sitting in the yard looking at me for the last two weeks , but the soil temp is too low to get any of it out .

The lambs are coming very heavy and lively which im happy with but its taking its toll on the ewes .
There is a few that are a bit leaner than id like , but i winter them out and it has been a savage season on them . They'd be using alot of energy to keep warm , plus with the excuse of a summer we had , the silage quality mightn be as good as other years .
So far so good though .

What sort of lambs is that Hampshire bringing ???

Mastitis could raise the temp and cause scouring. Strip out the quarter 2 or 3 times a day. Our vet would prescribe antibiotics for prob 4 or 5 days.
