No white smoke from the meeting yet, http://www.clare.fm/sport will probably be the best place to get the updates.

No easy groups there, I know it's very early in the season to make a call.

    Senior A
Group 1: Newmarket on Fergus & Kilmaley - This could be tightest group of the lot, Kilmaley have had a great run but without any County lads anymore they could struggle, you'd imagine with their minors coming through and a few experiences heads they should be enough for Tulla and Tubber, although both of them will expect to beat any of the others as well.
Group 2: Cratloe & Crusheen - Barefield may struggle to avoid relegation this year, Ina-Mona will be challengers here as well though.
Group 3: Clonlara & Clooney/Quinn - Real changing of the guard group here.

Senior B - I think only 1 team from each group goes through, please correct me if you know.
Group 1: Eire Og - The Town are making great progress and will be looking to get back to full status next year.
Group 2: Ballyea - Ballyea should win, their under 21s should also win that.

    Intermediate
Group 1: Corofin, Ennistymon, Sixmilebridge, Whitegate - No idea here to be honest.
Group 2: Killanena - They will be looking to make a quick return to senior.
Group 3: Parteen, Feakle, Ogonnelloe, Crusheen - Again, no idea, sorry

I believe that NoF are 4/1 favourites for the Championship, Cratloe are 8/1 and the rest are ~16/1, again open to correction on that.

I'm really looking forward to the match today, met a couple of the players at the Pakie Ryan run yesterday, they seem up for the challenge.

I do have a feeling that we might be caught out for goals today, in the last few games we've been lucky with some saves/blocks/hooks/wides, Kilkenny are a lot more clinical than other teams in front of goal.

imo, Group 2 of the Senior A is the toughest group. 3 sides that feel they have the ability to be genuine challengers.
Thats back to back years Cratloe have the tough group got, last year they were in with Clonlara and the Bridge, this year its Crusheen and Ina-Mona.

With 5 teams being culled to intermediate, it promises to be a fairly spicy championship.

Well Clare left that behind them, some awful shooting and the goalie cost us big time. Kilkenny didn't look good at all but still beat us, players really need a kick up the arse for this.

I think I've calmed down a bit since yesterday, my 2 cents on yesterdays game.

Pa in goal has a brilliant puck out and is a real asset, for the first goal however he was brutal, should never have come off his line, should have trusted his corned back.
Nicky, poor showing at the office, got some great possession but got caught with it.
Tony Kelly, was bullied, started off brilliant and setup the goal, disappeared when he got hit in the first half.
Colin Ryan, put on an exhibition of free taking, but why was he going back to his own half back line to take the frees? There has to be a half back that can take a free from distance.
Special mention for John Conlon, scored a point from a difficult angle but was TERRIBLE for his 2 goal chances, the one in the first half he was terrified that he was going to get clocked by the goalie, in the second half not only did he hit it straight at the goalie but hit it so softly that it nearly went over the goal who had moved to save it, it's not good enough at intercounty level for your full forward to miss 2 open goals like that.

    Positives from the game.
We were better than Kilkenny and should have won.
Colin Ryan is a great asset from frees.
Pa Kelly has a brilliant puck out.
The short passing no longer seems to be the be all and end all, some direct balls were played.

    Negatives
Pa doesn't inspire confidence in goal.
We have no leaders who will take the game by the scruff of the neck, for 10 minutes after after time someone should have taken control.
We are over-reliant on frees for scores.
We don't take our goal chances, and goals win matches.

A couple of side notes, the Park is an absolute disgrace, rusted barded wire around all fences, no shops, bathrooms a disgrace, no organisation for people getting in. About time however that young people are allowed on the pitch at half time, that was great to see.
I heard it before about Clare people and didn't believe it, now I can see it's true, all Clare people do is talk about their last good team, they don't look their their next great team, every player was being compared to their counter-part from the 90s, we have to move on past that.

clare really lost it in the first 10 minutes of the second half, i thought nicky used to be able to take long distance frees?

because of our missed chances in that match we still have a chance of being relegated hope we can beat tipp.

i'm confident about the championship though i think we can beat alot of teams this year the lads need to beleive though aswell.

I don't know about the championship, I thought that the team yesterday were nearly at full tilt, I can't see them having much more to offer to be honest, I'm not confident at all unfortunately :(

A fit Conor McGrath and Honan offer a lot more straight away.
For me, a lot will depend on how we line out up front, for a rarity we have scoring forwards but are persisting with non-scoring forwards and square pegs in round holes with the likes of Galvin & Podge Collins at corner forward. Part of this is due to the afore mentioned out injured.

    The positives for me are
extremely competitive in every game, both losses by a single point.
    David Mac in the backs
Shane O Donnell in the forwards.

Next Sunday will be a great test, every team can make play offs or end up in the relegation, for all its faults/perceived faults, its been a really competitive tight league by and large

I enjoyed the match yesterday and think that this Clare team will be a serious proposition come championship time with their pace on a dry sod in Thurles or Croke Park. A few times yesterday, they just ghosted past some of the KK players such as Joyce, Tommy Walsh, Paddy Hogan to name a few. Davy has them fit and working as a unit but to me, if they play more direct, it would be better for the team. I can never figure out how Fergal Lynch gets so much game time, surely there's somebody else as good if not better?

Agree totally with you about the direct play. There were times yesterday, especially in the 2nd half where the player in possession had to uneccesarily do a mini solo before striking the ball. That kind of stuff will not suffice in the whit-hot heat of a championship game. In the heel of the hunt Clare must be kicking themselves this morning. For sure they handed 2 points to KK.

Yeah, the 10/15 mins after half time was when the game was lost. Clare were completely on top but drove a lot of poor wides (the old adage about a bad wide being as good as a good point was true). Then against the run of play, Kilkenny scored a softish goal which had a big swing in the game

what is the story with conor mcgrath lads? he was influential to us getting promoted last year, bad injury?

darach looked to cause problems when he came on give him games, we all know how deadly he was at u21 level

McGrath had hip surgery late last year, wouldn't expect to see him for a month at least. Fergal Lynch being left on the field was bizarre.

Good win for the footballers today over London. David Tubridy was brilliant. Big game against Limerick next week in Ennis, win and they are promoted along with the winners of Tipp V Offaly

we in trouble now after todays result, are we really any better than two years ago?

Our team that lined out today is fairly close to championship as we are going to get when you take injuries into account.

According to reports they have been training like dogs 5/6 times a week, tipp with very liitle serious training done.

Cork will not miss the chances against us the next day when they really need to win, if we go down this year it will be a while before we come back up.
To be honest this group of players have to start delivering now, we have to at least be challenging for Munster and I honestly can't see it, if waterford beat us again we are at nothing which i though was an im possibilty at start of year.

If we get relegated this year it'll be a major set back for us, not that anything will be done of course.

The training the team is doing is a bit severe to say the least, they are getting together 6 times a week, once for tactics, the craziest bit though is where they train Tuesday night and then in the gym on Wednesday morning at around 6am. I went to see them training a couple of times, the amount of abuse being doled out by Davy to the players is a disgrace as well, I counted 29 back room staff there as well, I shudder to think what all this is costing us, but I'm sure the County Board Secetray (his father) or the Supporters Club (his sister) will be making sure everything is above board and needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭ballykev

Had heard about the backroom team, cost must be unreal allright shur he almost broke Waterford. at clare county agm last year, Brendan Keane I tink open to correction. On that said spending on county teams is not sustainable.

Davy is under serious pressure now IMO the man hasn't a clue, shouting and screaming like an ass no need of it, you don't see Cody, harte, Gilroy etc or any top class manager.

This years targets should have been to retain division 1 status and to win a championship match, I have a feeling that the focus was put on retaining division 1 status, we seemed to be ahead of other teams in our preparation, come the summer when the other teams catch up we'll be well short of what's needed I fear.

I've a funny feeling we will hammer the shiite out of Clare in the playoff. :p:D:D

Based on what? Cork have only been able to manage one win out of five matches in the league this season. The worst in the division.

Clare have already beaten Cork by six points in their own backyard this season.

Now what makes you think that Cork can somehow beat Clare in a neutral venue? All indicators point to a Clare victory.
