Will the last person to switch off the lights switch off the lights?

(don't they usually do this stunt after the clocks go forward)

I'm gonna participate fully. I'll just keep the lights on so I can see what I'm doing while participating.

Turning off the lights? Wimps, go full tilt and turn off every electronic appliance in the house, then sit down and consider your existence... hippies.

I always turn them off in unused rooms anyway, why change the habits of a lifetime, as for the room I’m in, no way!

Nah I don't agree with this Earth Hour approach either but it's a good thing that there are people who give a sh1t about the environment.

We are bombarded with ads telling us to watch our carbon footprint, fine, no problem with that. I would be quite conscious of saving energy in general.

But then you have the likes of starbucks and other fuckers leaving their lights on all night.

I'm all in favour of pointless lights being switched off, every night not just the one night, the saving in electricity costs could mean cheaper stuff in the shop.

    http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/13/03/18/1527213/why-earth-hour-is-a-waste-of-time-and-energy
"Next Saturday from 8:30PM to 9:30PM EST is 'Earth Hour' (0:30 to 1:30 UTC on Sunday). Millions of people will be participating by shutting off their lights for an hour to show they care about the environment. However, according to this article in Slate, Earth Hour is simply 'vain symbolism,' and it won't actually save any energy — quite the opposite. Quoting: 'Notice that you have not been asked to switch off anything really inconvenient, like your heating or air-conditioning, television, computer, mobile phone, or any of the myriad technologies that depend on affordable, plentiful energy electricity and make modern life possible. If switching off the lights for one hour per year really were beneficial, why would we not do it for the other 8,759? Hypothetically, switching off the lights for an hour would cut CO2 emissions from power plants around the world. But, even if everyone in the entire world cut all residential lighting, and this translated entirely into CO2 reduction, it would be the equivalent of China pausing its CO2 emissions for less than four minutes. In fact, Earth Hour will cause emissions to increase. As the United Kingdom's National Grid operators have found, a small decline in electricity consumption does not translate into less energy being pumped into the grid, and therefore will not reduce emissions. Moreover, during Earth Hour, any significant drop in electricity demand will entail a reduction in CO2 emissions during the hour, but it will be offset by the surge from firing up coal or gas stations to restore electricity supplies afterward.'"

Don't bother. Really, don't. I was in one massive industrial plant that had just been built on the outskirts of dublin, the whole interior was airconditioned, heated and dehumidified by massive(40') air handling units mounted up at roof level. The interior fit out took a year and a half, then the unit was idle for about 6 months while technical stuff was done. The air-handling units were on full blast for the whole time.

Not if you turned off Swords would you even dint the amount of electricity that used needlessly for 2 years. I could give you a hundred other examples. On a personal level, don't bother conserving energy, it's just a load of cobblers. Industry and Commercial concerns pure wastage dwarfs any saving that might ever be made by well intentioned individuals.

Another example that rots my toot is the C.I.E leaving diesel locomotives idling overnight and for days on end because their starter motors are broken and if they turn them off they can't re-start them without repairing the starter motor. The.mother.of.a.small.person.in.fcukin. chile.wept. Fix the BL00DY starter.

no bother. In any sense. Lads burning scrap tyres at night dwarf anything your bit of smudge might produce anyway.;)
