But why does it have to be giving nods to previous movies?
Why can't it just be it's own movie?

I dunno ask JJ Abrams. He is the nods master though and perhaps because Sci-fi nerds like nods. In Star Trek: The Motion Picture ILM decided to have some fun and inserted Darth Vader and Miss Piggy into the special effects. The latest Star Trek Movie has C3PO in the debris scene.

The footage shown before The Hobbit was fairly underwhelming imo. I'd say it'll be much better in context but it mostly just kinda annoyed me, particularly
    Kirk and Bones' super-speed swimming.

More footage: a 30-second teaser to be shown during the Super Bowl:

    "I am better."
    "At what?"
    "Everything."

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Looks like Cumberbatch is probably playing an "augment", which is Enterprise terminology for one of Khan's genetically engineered supermen. If so, he's a Khan-like character without being Khan himself. Would make sense based on what we know to date.

Ties in with a rumour that I'm hearing a lot.
That Noel Clarke's unnamed character is a member of the Soong family.

So the same guy that designed Data and Lore?
    Interesting.

Star Trek/Star Wars crossover in the next few years?

Incredibly unlikely as it's two different studios and two different time-periods.

I'm sure it has been done in a comic somewhere; if Dr. Who had a crossover comic with Star Trek (recently!), then I'm sure SW and ST had a little moment together :)

I'm almost certain having a Star Trek and Star War tie-in would completely alienate most of the fans of both franchises.

Chris Evans plays the role of both Captain America & The Human Torch.

I heard they're doing the Cross-over movie and it's pretty much going to follow the Mrs Doubtfire storyline

Hmmm upside down union flags are a bit insulting in the trailer.

Well if the set-pieces of the trailer are anything to go by, it looks like very little of the action will feature (on) the Enterprise; damnit, are giant spaceships slapping at each other just not cool or exciting enough anymore?

Kinda regret watching that now, way too spoilery but, since I have...
So is Cucumberbatch Section 31 instead of being an Augment (or maybe an augment working in Section 31) and it does look like it's the Enterprise (ncc-1701) crashing into the ocean afterall

Yeah, I kinda regret watching it too. They gave away some of the mystery behind Cumberbatch's character -
    One of Starfleet's top agents?

The fact that he was referred to Harrison as being an
    agent
    and not an
    officer
is very interesting to me and I might be getting an idea about the meat of the film that is laid over the action skeleton.

Actual plot spoilers and conjecture ahead
In the opening scenes, Kirk breaks the Prime Directive and is demoted for his actions. Kirk was punished for rebelling against Starfleet and what Starfleet are about. If Harrison is an "agent", he is almost certainly a part of Section 31 - an organization that officially does not exist and who do the dirty work necessary. Perhaps Harrsion rebels against Starfleet when he is asked to do something he finds morally abhorrent. Just like Kirk, he is rebelling against what Starfleet are about. There seems to be a great parallel present.

Harrison seems to be superhuman going on the scenes in the trailers though doesnt he?
