The difference here is that these two brought unconscious girls in wheelchairs to their rooms.....and apparently nobody thought that there might be anything wrong there.

To me that is morally - if not legally - indefensible.

Were the girls unconscious? is there cctv of this?
The other thing here is how were staff to know these were not couples going back to the hotel together?

I don't like saying this in this case but everyone is responsible for their own actions, blaming others will not help.

Rubbish. I lived in Japan for several years and I have visited and drank in most AP countries and I never saw any one being pushed around in a wheelchair (where would you even get one?).
I stand corrected as i was going on information from a buddy of mine.

calling two black guys monkeys are we?

Yes. In that video of him bouncing around the train he looks like a jungle ape.

Swinging from the handrails terrorizing passengers, behaving exactly like a monkey from the zoo.

    Apparently they were:

"At the hotel, the men borrowed wheelchairs to get the unconscious women to the rooms."

But I am not sure I understand what you mean by "responsible for their own actions," in this context.

Even if they had gone out with the intention of getting plastered (evidence suggests that was not case by the way), are you saying they would be "responsible" for any subsequent assault and murder?

Started reading the report on the japanese prison
I had 1 kilo of hashish in my possession and I was convicted for violating the cannabis control laws of Japan. For my crime I was sentenced to 5 years forced labor and sent to Fuchu prison in Tokyo.

Carry hash OR rape & murder...
    jayz

As has been pointed out in scores of posts at this stage, he was tried as a minor; had he been tried as an adult, he may well have faced execution (which the prosecution argued would have been an appropriate punishment, had it been available.)

I'm sorry if I'm way off the mark here, but it looks as if you're suggesting this girl may be responsible for her own rape and death?

Highlighted the important part of your statement there.

No matter how comatose drunk someone may be, they are not responsible for the actions of another person who rapes them, not even culpable in the slightest way.

A person who gets comatose drunk is responsible for getting comatose drunk and nothing more.

No not saying that at all, she befriended someone who turned out to be a pycho, she was not to know what he was like.
I'm sorry i said that now because it will cause controversy.

Are you asking as a mod or a poster? am i obliged to answer? is this the AH court?

That video has nothing to do with anything. That kind of behaviour is a daily occurance on the Luas. Although it's usually younger kids doing it. It still doesn't make the person doing it an ape or a monkey. It does make them an idiot.

Unless I specifically state that it's a mod note, or if I post in bold, then I'm just a poster.

It's quite normal to be asked to explain what you mean on a discussion forum, there's no need to get so defensive.

So you make a vague statement that goes against the grain and elicits a reaction (how unusual of you) and when asked to elaborate, you get all defensive, which begs the question: why did you say it so? Could it... possibly... be to get attention and cause controversy?

I'm not getting one bit defensive.
There is no point in explaining when the majority is against you, it's basically pissing against the wind.

It shows what kind of person James 'King Tight' Blackston is, a person who enjoys intimidating other passengers while bouncing around the place like some kind of animal.

It also shows the mindset of the company he keeps who think that this kind of behaviour is hilarious.

Well they're only going to be against you if you did in fact mean that rape and murder victims are somehow responsible for the actions of their attackers. If that's not what you meant then no one would be against you, but you seem unwilling to explain and clear that up.

Everyone saying 5 years is nothing, yeah I agree he should be given more but over here he probably would've gotten off/served 3-5 in the 'joy hotel.
Link“Vocational training is a possibility in Japanese juvenile facilities, but assuming [Mr Hinds] does not speak Japanese, it is likely that he will have to undertake basic labour,” said Prof Goto, who has written numerous papers and books on Japanese juvenile law, including Hanzai Higaisha to Shounen-ho (Murder Victims and the Juvenile Law).

According to official information, the majority of labour work at the Fuchu prison involves the production of toys, Melamine tableware and paper, and the processing of metal parts and panel painting. At Kawagoe, most labour centres around cleaning and the assembly of ballpoint pens and fireworks.

Inmates are reportedly paid around 5,000 yen (€40) per month, which is put aside for life after prison.

Mr Hinds, a musician from the US, whose verdict will be read at the Tokyo District Court today, will be expected to work eight hours per day, five days per week, should he be found guilty, Prof Goto said.

He would be required to attend workshops that would instruct him in such areas as accountability and understanding the feelings of his victim’s family, Prof Goto said.

Japanese prison cells take the form of communal rooms — 12m sq tatami mat rooms that are shared by six to eight inmates — or one-person cells, measuring 4m sq, including the space taken by a toilet. Each room has a television and foreign inmates are supplied with English-language newspapers.

As Mr Hinds is unable to speak Japanese and so can’t communicate effectively with Japanese inmates, it is likely he would be placed in one of the single cells, of which there are many at Fuchu prison, according to Prof Goto.

Often in adult situations, beds are provided for foreigners, but crimes of this magnitude committed by juvenile foreigners are rare, so it’s possible that no such special provisions are readily available, Prof Goto said. However, it is likely that any requests for special dietary considerations would be met, she added.

It still has no relevance to the case. There's lots of assholes who act the maggot on public transport all over the world.

I find the comments on that video fairly disturbing. The vast majority are racist in nature. There is no place for that crap. Obviously the guy is a cretin but resorting to racist abuse is not big or clever.

One of the more dire cop-outs.

Seems to be a lot of attention on both the colour and nationality of the perpetrators of these shocking acts, including posts referring to them as monkeys because of their colour.
What difference does it make what colour they are and what their nationality is, an asshole is an asshole whatever their race, colour , or nationality.

The poster who originally referred to these guys as having monkey brains made no reference to this video. Not in his original post or after I questioned it.

don't think he/she needs you to make excuses for them.

Under 20 is considered a minor in Japan, which is disgraceful IMO.

The guy is obviously a sickening beast. The support he got in the States just shows how backward that country really is.

Source? I haven't read about any significant support for him.

Some local church and people from the community in Memphis got together with the intention of fundraising to cover his legal defense costs.

This is a really sad case. Feel really sorry for Nicola Furlong and her family. She looks like a nice girl who could have had a great life. Was the CCTV footage of the taxi released? what was said in the car? I don't think the train video or cctv have anythng to do with the murder but they give a good indication of thepersons character

As much as I oppose murder or any crimes, he was presumed innocent until proven guilty and now he'll face a prison sentence, unfortunately a possibly lenient one.

Back on topic, I don't see how that somehow represents how 'backwards' the US is, considering that I've been living here for a while and, from what I've read, it's mostly his friends and family supporting him.

Futhermore, had he committed the crime in the States I can guarantee he'd face a much longer and harsher sentence.
