You insensitive moron.......................you sound like the honky spawn that was on trial

Woah! Easy!! I'm not condoning his actions at all. On the contrary.

My view is that regardless who was responsible for Ms Furlong's incapacitated state he had NO RIGHT to assume she had consented to sex.

Even a horny 19 year old has to know that it's wrong to take sexual advantage of a comatose young woman.

There's a difference between a slightly squiffy young woman whose inhibitions might be lowered by a few alcopops maybe going a little further than she might otherwise do but is still in full control of her senses and somebody who is so smashed she has to be taken upstairs in a wheelchair. As Ms Furlong was.

Who got her in that state? Doesn't matter. Those boys were predators and deserved to do time.

My only point is that I don't think Hinds would, in reality, have got a tougher sentence here. It would probably have been manslaughter, and he might even have escaped an attempted rape charge. The CCTV footage in the taxi was damning, but how many Irish taxis have CCTV in them?

Like itac this case also toughed a nerve with me. I'm a little older than Nicola but my sister is her age. She is living in Oz now and I can totally associate with their family structure and how easily it could have been my sister or me. So disappointed with today's outcome - I have been following this case but only today have I learned that Hinds was to be sentenced as a minor? Did they not have a small court case a few months ago where they decided that both Blackson and Hinds would be charged as adults???

Hinds was more than a horny 19yo. Remember this video or Blackston terrorising poor innocent people on a train in Japan? They were prime dicks.

I am really intrigued to know what happened the two girls after they met the men. My instinct is that they went for dinner & drinks with the men and I think they slipped drugs into their drinks BUT nothing was found in Nicola's system to prove this(other than Zanaz prescribed in low dose and lidocaine from medical procedure in hospital) I know the girls had two drinks, vodka and red bulls, and then a tequila at which point the friend said she blacked out. Now maybe they don't drink too often and they got drunk easily, how can it be that TWO people get so drunk (after three drinks?) that they are BOTH comoatose in a taxi??? I find this very very strange???

I cannot believe a hotel would roll a wheelchair out to a taxi and bring the women up to the room. They should be ashamed of themselves. They should have a sign on the door 'We support and assist date rape - at your service"

My comment was preempting the usual criminal appologists we get on here who are all about the perps rights above justice.
I followed this trial closely. The guy showed zero remorse. Him and his friend put these unconscious girls in a taxi and brought them back to the hotel, the taxi had cctv and audio recording which revealed the depraved crass coversation they had about their plans for the girls icluding keeping them "****ed up" to make them less able to resist.
Hinds also detailed his "chistian" background. He refered to his victim as "Nicky" trying to fain a friendly relationship with her. The Furlong family requested he not do that as she was never known by that name.
All in all, a nasty piece of work.

Scariest thing to me is, if raping and strangling women is your 'thing', what are the chances you'll stick to doing it just the once?

Surely if this is where his predilections lie, there is a very high chance he'll do it again :(

Has anyone read the comments on youtube regarding that video?

Blackston also filmed another incapacitated woman & the police found the video on his ipad,2 complete scumbags.

At least according to Japanese law,you are basically considered guilty & have to prove your innocence, over here he'd probably have gotten off going by the bizzare sentences some of our judges hand out.

Traces of lidocaine (which is widely used as a date rape drug) were found in her system. Defense lawyers argued that it was due to the fact that a tracheal tube had been inserted by paramedics, but prosecutors and a forensic expert witness maintain that because she was already dead at that time, it would have been impossible for it to make its way through her blood stream.

Do you have a link for this?

The trial heard from the doctor in the Tokyo Medical Emergency Hospital, who unsuccessfully attempted to revive Ms Furlong with injections of adrenaline.
Dr Kenta Aida said the drug lidocaine had been used in her treatment.
A breathing device inserted into her throat was coated in the drug, which he said explained the traces of lidocaine found in Ms Furlong's blood.

Japanese seem to place a lot of faith in their ability to rehabilitate prisoners.
somehow i fear their efforts will be wasted on these.

these 2 are classic sociopaths. extremely difficult to change what's hardwired into their monkey-brains.

I feel so sorry for her family. For her parents to have to sit there and listen to that baxtards claims that their daughter 'liked it rough' must have been stomach-churning. The defence tried so hard to tear her reputation to shreds. I could tell from the family's statement afterwards that the way she was portrayed by the defence hit them very hard. Disgusting

You are taking the p1ss? Drugged, raped, strangled to death, that isn't a lovely way to go. Its not like pulling a trigger, or detonating a few kilos of semtex, that can be disconnected from by the perpetrator. But to strangle someone, up close & personal, to watch their life ebb away as you squeeze tightly. That takes a special type of barsteward & make no mistake.
Edit: the judge is quoted as saying the attack was both atrocious & vicious.

But he was probably out of it himself at the time. Drunk, maybe on coke. He would have been half in charge of his actions.

I'm not saying that it's not horrific. I'm just saying it's different to a Larry Murphy type thing. When he went upstairs with her he probably had no intention of killing her. Whereas Larry would have been plotting it all along.

And that's the difference between manslaughter and murder.

He'd actually have served longer over here.

Yes and no. Over here he wouldn't be considered a minor. But if he was, he wouldn't have served more than 10 years. And even if he wasn't considered a minor, he probably would have been done for manslaughter, he might not have served more than 10 years.

I can't find a link which mentions the objections put forward by prosecutors regarding the lidocaine + tracheal tube, but it was definitely stated a few times on radio reports during the trial.

The fact that CCTV shows the two men helping the apparently unconscious girls into a taxi, and then requiring wheelchairs to bring them to their room; doesn't really dispel the possibility that they were drugged.

    According to the Herald.ie:

“CCTV footage from a taxi apparently shows the two women unconscious on the back seat. In the video, Hinds and Blackston are recorded mocking the physical state of the women and talking about having sex with them.”

The Japan Times also reported: “In it, the men are heard laughing while talking about having sex with the women, saying that the women “were just falling into our lap”.

In the tape, Richard Hinds says, “we gotta keep them f**ked up,” while his friend, James Blackston, said “we are going to f**k them and leave them in my room”.

I was absolutely disgusted reading the reports from that case. He sounds like a sickening individual, some of the stuff he came out with in court was truly stomach-churning.

He deserves everything he gets. It disgust me that he'll be earning money while he's locked away.

Ah well that's ok then. Poor chap.

Utter nonsense. That poor girl was also drunk and was not fully in charge of her actions and look what happened to her. Rubbish excuse to use.

One glance at this "mans" lack of remorse and the vile dialect between himself and his friend in the taxi not to mention how he spoke about her in court tells you all you need to know about him.

This is despite the fact that the average sentence for murder over here is longer then 10 years?

It also doesn't confirm the possibility about them being drugged either. I do find it strange that the prosecution would claim that the ER doctor who treated Nicola was either lying or wrong though.

It's absolutely disgusting. That rotten low-life should spend the rest of his days behind bars. The lies he said in court were unbelievable. What I found most shocking was when he said while he was choking her, she started coughing up blood and she wanted to carry on having sex? What a blatant LIE. The parents having to listen to that must have been awful for them, even though it was clearly lies because no person would just carry on having sex if they are coughing up blood. He's just one sick twisted rotten individual. I hope his time in prison is hell.

Or have a chat with the Yakuza about giving him a nice welcome to the Japanese prison system

So much bloodlust and old testament style vengeance calls here. And a few calling for him to be raped? Nice.

I wouldn't wish the Yakuza on anyone. I suppose you're aware that many Yakuza's leanings are anti-foreigner?

But I guess that would suit the thinly veiled racism here. Talk of monkeys and (c)rap music et al.

Disgusting crime and equally disgusting thread.

Grow up. That's not what I'm saying.

He'll do his time, most probably all of it.

Some people here just love to get off on fantasies of torture, male rape and murder.

Not that far removed from the perp.

Nonsense. There is justifiable anger at the short sentence this scumbag got. Personally I couldn't care if this jerk was from Memphis or Moate, if he is black, white, red or yellow, or anything in between. I sincerely hope he gets what's coming to him.

Comparing posters to convicted murderers is stupid?

I get the feeling some people here have a hankering for old style justice.

Which says more about them than about this case.

Look at the reactions of the Furlong family who have been dignified and steadfast throughout this case. OK the sister called for the death penalty but she's only young and clearly still distraught. But the parents, especially the mother, specifically said they did NOT want the death penalty. And they were probably mature and calm enough to know they were unlikely ever to get it in this case anyway.

Today they said their daughter's name was vindicated, which it was. That the perpetrator's lies were exposed, which they were. That they were grateful to the judge for his comments. They are no Gordon Wilson "I forgive my daughter's killer" bleeding heart types. They are clearly disgusted by Hinds and, in the father's words "never want to hear of that man again" and nor should they.

Fair play to them. They have a tough station now but their dignity and respect were exemplary.

I wouldn't like to be going where Hinds is for the next five years. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Just reading a piece on the Fox Memphis website. The spin they have put on it is sickening -

    http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/story/18733020/memphis-musician-arrested-in-japan

The above was written a few months back, but the below is the most recent with the same spin. Seriously, this Les Smith should be locked up with Hinds.

    http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/story/21475873/memphis-musicians-trial-begins-in-japan

    Unbelievable.

He'll stay in Japan, was just mentioned on the news that prisons in Japan are run with military precision.Silence pretty much all the time as he doesn't speak Japanese & will be confined to a single cell, any movement of prisoners requires them to march in file behind wardens, zero contraband, even tea, coffee & cigarettes are banned with early lights out & wake up call at 6.30am.

Nice to know he won't be given a nice new pair of €130 Nike Air Max when he goes inside unlike here.
