Aer Lingus Cancellation - yes/no answer needed

Do I need to wait until the travel date(s) have passed before I request a (tax) refund for the flights? It says the request must be submitted "within a month" of the travel date. I'm not going anymore for personal reasons. Its to and back from Madrid, if that's of any relevance.
