Erratic temperature reading - '05 Passat

Passat 1.9 110bhp 130,000 miles is showing me an erratic temp reading, fluctuates between the 60 and 90 mark, but never overheats. Power delivery is fine and fuel consumption as good as ever returning 52 mpg per tank. Nothing else out of the ordinary.

Any suggestions what might be causing the temp reading and whether its a simple/cheap fix or not?

    Thanks!

Usually it's the coolant temperature sensor Or even the Thermostat..

Not that pricey to get sorted...But if it's the Temp Sensor,,try to get one from the main dealer,,as ones from motor factors etc tend not to last that long.

Does it race sometimes when you start it up ? i'e revs upto 1k revs for a while.

More likely a sticking thermostat if your not seeing any difference in fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption tends to fall with coolant temp sensor issues.
