my download speed is 1.7mb a second

Seems unusually low. Are you including line rental and vat in that? Is that your total bill?

Vodafone have broadband at 24 mb down, 1 up for €31.99 (€29.99 if your a bill pay customer). They call it simply broadband or something. That includes line rental and broadband.

I haven't seen anything lower than that in the dsl market.

Sky might be cheaper, depending on a number of factors.
