Depends entirely on the context and person(I take it we're talking about women here?) involved. How they ask another. If it's "I'm feeling self conscious at the moment, feel a bit bloated and am about to hit the tiles, so do you think I'm fat?" then no bloody way do you approach the truth, or you approach it downwind. Behind some bushes. If they're asking "I need some encouragement to make a lifestyle change and want an honest answer" then yea I'd be honest with them. When I say honest I don't mean what I might see as "fat". People's perception varies quite a bit, so I'd try and aim for an average yay or nay.

You can tell her she's fat in a tactful way, and not hurt her feelings (tooo much), but encourage her to do something about it.

Sample answers:

Bad: Yes you are, I'm surprised you don't need a crane to get you out of bed and a tent to cover your arse. I'd rather eat my own head than see you naked.

Good: I wouldn't use the word fat, but I do think that you were even more attractive than you are now - if thats possible - when you were a few kilos lighter than you are now. How about we start exercising together and see if we can both tone up?

This is one thing that really annoys me. If someone can't see they're fat, then there's something wrong with them.

I've nothing wrong with fat people, I have a problem with people who go through life pretending they're not.

The mindset of these people usually develops into "im not fat if there's someone fatter"

Tell the truth. Do it for humanity

but of course reinforce you couldn't give a monkeys about it :P

In my experience, it's never overweight women who ask this question, it's usually those that are a) digging for compliments b) are having an episode of insecurity or c) just having a "fat day" and are probably approaching Shark Week. Genuinely overweight people know they're overweight.

If a skinny women asks the question, she's fishing for compliments. Lets play along.

If the mrs has put on a little weight and asks the question. Grow a pair and give it to her straight

The right answer is no, but you should realise that she is asking for a reason; she may be feeling vulnerable about an entirely different issue, so it's a sign the ball is on your side to ask about what's bothering her....and then, joy of joys, ye can talk about yere feelings!
