My Mam is coming to live with us in Dublin permanantly we have taken all of the stuff from her house and wondering now what to do with a lot of antique? stuff that she has but doesnt want. We have a lot of figurines, beleek china, royal Albert, cup/saucer/tea pot sets, crystal, vases and we don't have room for them. I was thinking of adverts but if there was a place I could take them and get them valued first so I am not under/over pricing them. Maybe down the line markets but a reputable one not selling bric a brac a lot of here stuff might be good I have no knowledge of selling on a market stall

If you wanted to, you could use this as an opportunity to learn about antiques. :)

I learned a lot in a similar situation a few years ago.
I looked up on the internet and in books and now know a
little about what to look out for ;)

    The Basics
Be very careful when handling things. Hold things with two hands
even if it is small. Be slow and deliberate when handling things.

Take your time when packing and unpacking items. Get some bubble-wrap
    and good strong boxes.

Don't clean anything until you know what it is and, if and how it should be cleaned.

Don't sell anything until you know what it is and have seen some guide prices.
    You get this knowledge by:

    Reading Books
Look at some books on antiques. The "Millers" books are great,
they have guide prices as well. Public libraries often have some
of these in the art section.

Here's a handy little book that is pocket sized and features gold, silver,
    pottery and porcelain marks:

You said you are in Dublin, so head to the Chapters bookshop in Parnell Street.
They have a big selections of new and second-hand books.
I have found some nice books in there.

    Using the Internet
Start at our very own links section:

Use Google, and don't forget to bookmark a good site when you find one!

Going to Antiques fairs and shops

Again, start with our own lists of upcoming fairs:

Here is a good one I found a while ago:

At posh antiques auctions they have a book with guide prices, and often they
will publish a book after the auction is over with the actual prices the items sold for.

Above all, enjoy it. It should be a fun experience and you can have a great time with family
and friends, and make some new ones as well.

    Happy hunting:)

Francis Street, just off Thomas Street, Dublin 8, is Dublin's antique store street. I've never been in any of them, but you might get good advice there. There's plenty of stores there, so ask in a few places to get the best prices.

I shouldn't think that they are worth much - certainly not in Francis Street - and you would better running them past an auctioneer like John Weldon of Weldon's Auctioneers,Unit 2, Cows Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin .8. Tel: (01) 635 1114 :)
