I think The Thing and it's remake perfectly sum up the problems with modern film-makers going straight to computer generated effects when physical effects are more than adequate and look the biz.
Dog soldiers is another film where the lack of cgi made it a better film when compared to some other films where they went the other way, twilight Underworld and wolfman for example.

I meant Underworld, don't know how I ever got those two crap films mixed up.

I read the book, unintentionally I might add. Was travelling with work and this was recommended to me, so I actually bought it..

How far did you 'unintentionally' read? :D

Read loads of it before reaching the conclusion he's neither going to ride her or kill her so lost interest :)

We must, however, be careful of using the same standards when comparing cgi rich films and the different craft of video games, the passive versus the interactive, Empire Strikes Back versus MGS4.... Oh, wait... ;)

the Harry Potter books are actually quite good, they're well written unlike Twilight

I wouldn't go that far. They're a lot of fun especially for the target audience but in terms of kids books I'd rather be reading Z is for Zachariah

I'd say the first 4 are fantastic, 5 was meh, 6 was bloody good, and 7 managed to span 759 pages, yet still feel both rushed and plodding in paradoxically equal measures. I suppose, by that point, Rowling could've just written a Hermione/Ron slash-fic and gotten away with it for an ending.

    His Dark Materials > All.

Although those darn Narnia books are the most insidious of the lot!

Those are two book series I really enjoyed.

Enders Game is outstanding, a "young adults" book but also serious as hell.
The other Ender books are rather different though but still fantastic.
I haven't read the Enders Shadow books, those that are "gaiden" to the main series, but they are supposed to be also very good.

I read City of Ember a couple of years ago, as well as the follow up sequel and prequel, they were pretty enjoyable too.

And, need mention Lewis Carroll and the Alice books? Also get your head around The Hunting of the Snark, wonderful.

Anyone see this Starfox demo someone put together for the Megadrive.

Runs on real hardware. Doesn't need the 32X or anything extra.

Finally, Blast Processing is a reality!

Thats very impressive. The framerate is terrible but the actual gameplay looks faster than the Snes in places.

The chap said its a very early demo (and almost just a straight port) but with tweaking he reckons he can get it running properly. Really amazing given that its not using SVP chip support!

It's not surprising considering how much faster the Megadrive CPU is to the SNES, the SNES is basically running a supercharged 16-bit NES processor.

I'm not sure he will get it up to speed considering he has put much of the game logic in yet. It's also missing some of the texture mapping and scaling effects in the SNES game. Still fair play to whoever programmed it.

Nothing says 'marketing' like dull middle-aged men in suits! How times have changed!

    Project Reality though. Brilliant.

I'm so annoyed with DIT. I think they managed to screw up yet again which means I could be without any money for the next month and I'm getting scared I might have to reapply for social services >:(

I'm just demonstrating undergraduate labs for them, I only do 4 hours a week for them.

It's really annoying, Games Fleadh is on this week and I'm not sure I have money to go to it. I'll be going to look jobs at it and I've been told it's the best place for it.

    It's a common acronym confusion.

What Retr0 is actually talking about is Dublin Institute of Transvestites.

Why they owe him money, well...one can only imagine :pac:

Sounds like a right mess they've made

The attic has been claimed by my offspring...I'll have to move all my retro consoles etc down into my own bedroom in order to make the attic a bit less of a games den & more a bedroom for an 11 year old.

In a way I'm really dreading it, the wiring, shelving etc & not to mention my own meager bedroom does not equal an easy solution. But on the other hand, I shall sleep very soundly at night in the warmth of my collection :(:o:):P:D:cool:

I hate that moment where you're moving everything around and you're suddenly surrounded by a mess of consoles and games. That's when you start asking questions like 'Do I really need all this?' or 'do I have an addiction/require help?'

When you reach that phase it's best to pick up the pace. :pac:

Quick question re the Gameboy Players for the GC. I know the unit itself can be from any region as most if not all GBA games are region free. But more specifically the startup disc, does that have to match the region of your console? Ie will a JAP startup disc work in a PAL GC?

I was wondering that myself last week, I came to the conclusion that it probably wouldn't :(
