Life and work (mainly) have been getting in the way of running over the last couple of weeks. Had a few things planned that cancelled running days too which meant that I didn't bother log for a while because it was frustrating enough not being able to run without writing about it.

The few runs that I did get in:

    Monday 4th February - 5.18 miles @ 8:49
    Thursday 7th February - 4.64 miles @ 8:34
    Friday 8th February - 3.31 miles @ 8:42
    Wednesday 13th February - 5.11 miles @ 8:36
    Monday 18th February - 5.08 miles @ 8:50

Today's run was the first time in ages that I wasn't fighting the elements out there (bar a freshing head wind). It was quite warm.

This week things hopefully will calm down and I can get a bit more consistency going. The missed runs due to work cannot really be helped. Going to trying and get out again in the mornings for my Wednesday run and weekend long run. It just isn't happening for me to get out late on a Sunday evening to do a long run. Things at home are getting into a better routine so hopefully can revive the missed Saturday morning run at silly o'clock.

A couple of weeks of low mileage and bad diet hasn't been too kind on the waistline either:(

    Tuesday 19th February

    5.11 miles @ 8:57

Legs felt a little heavy from yesterdays run, not used to two runs in the same week! Lovely day out again. Had been chased yesterday by two small dogs. Nearly lost my balance trying to avoid them. They were sitting out waiting for me today barking their wee heads off. Funny enough that was my quickest mile!

    Wednesday 20th February

    5.36 miles @ 8:57

Another lovely day for a run. Change around of work this week meant I could get out at lunchtime today. Took the legs a couple of miles to warm up and lose the heaviness feeling. Ran a different route today so didn't have to worry about four legged friends planning an ambush. Lunch time tomorrow is out so will have to be either morning or evening, hopefully morning.

    Friday 22nd February

    5.17 miles @ 8:29

Didn't go out yesterday morning or evening after all. Decided to take a rest day after 3 days runs. Legs felt much better for it today, a bit of spring in the step.

The pacing for this run was in no way planned. First mile was nice and easy (8:48) and as the legs warmed up the pace gradually dropped. Mile 2 had a bit of a decline (8:34) and route flattens out for mile 3 with a short decline near the end before starting to climb (8:27). Mile 4 is mainly uphill and flattens out near the end. Was aware that the pace was a bit quicker than normal but reckoned would lose time over this mile but I didn't (8:27). At the start of mile 5 switched the garmin over to show current lap pace and just let the legs stride themselves out to see where it took them (7:58). Let the pace drop rapidly after this on way back to office. Probably the first run of the week where it felt really good out there. Plan is to get an easy 10 miler in over the weekend to bring up a 30 mile week and get back in the habit of a regular long run.

    Saturday 23rd February

    10.28 miles @ 9:21

A morning run at last! This was all about distance. Just wanted to get a double digit mileage run done to have something to build on. Had a nice crisp morning for it. From half way onwards felt a bit of tightness in the left leg, never enough to make me stop just annoying. Other than that it was a pleasant run with the bonus of being back before 7 am.

    Week Summary

    Monday 25th February

    5.45 @ 8:46

Lovely day out for running. Route today had a few different lakes to run past. Looks all more impressive with the sun shining down on them. Running is so much easier when you are able to distract the mind.

    Tuesday 26th February

    5.13 miles @ 8:49

Felt a bit of discomfort in left leg again, in the region of upper hamstring. Felt it a bit yesterday but it was a little more annoying today. Stopped to stretch out the leg which seemed to do the trick but then it came back again. Will try some more stretching this evening to see if that helps.

get yourself to a physio or sports massage.

I was getting niggles like that in my hamstring before the marathon last Oct - didn't get it seen to and developed an abductor issue that lasted 2 months.

Best to get some 'body miantenance' to help!!

Half your problem is probably trying to get back to the routine you had going a few weeks ago when you may not be up to this fitness with the break you had to your routine.

    Friday 1st March

    5.22 miles @ 8:51

Hadn't run on Wednesday as planned but then was busy at work on Thursday so had an extra rest day. Hoped that might have eased the niggles a bit. Felt alright for the first half of the run but then problems came back probably worse than ever. I finished the run knowing that this wasn't just going to magically go away and as RK had advised best to get it seen to soon rather than later.

    Saturday 2nd March
    4.3 miles @ 9:47

Despite accepting that I might need to get a professional opinion I reckoned it was worth trying something different myself too. Done this run around my 2 mile route. Plan was to do some laps of this until I felt any problems and then retire home for some proper stretching. Pace was kept very easy. First lap went by without much fuss but then started to feel the niggle again and called it a day at the end of the second lap. Spent much longer than normal stretching things out and then left it to rest.

    Monday 4th May
    4.15 miles @ 9.20

Following on from Saturdays run wanted to see if extra stretching was helping. Kept the pace easier than normal, and was pleasantly surprised as the run went along it wasn't bothering me. Made sure the route was as close to flat as possible too as issues seemed to come on more during or after hills. It hadn't gone away altogether but was much better than last week. Took a mile of the distance so that there was more time after the run to have a good stretch.

    Tuesday 5th March
    4.19 miles @ 9:11

Another good run. Started out with the intention of pacing the run the same as yesterday but as the run progressed the pace gradually picked up a bit. Again its not altogether gone but definite signs of improvement.

Will just monitor it for the next few runs and hopefully can work it out otherwise need to have it seen to.

Have decided to give Bundoran 10 mile run a miss this Saturday. Main goal for new few weeks is to try and get back to a consistent level of running and then think about races. Would have done a 5k thats on the 24th but have managed to get Mrs. Daz to agree to run that one. She is new to running but extremely competitive so it will be interesting to see how she gets on.

    Thursday 7th March
    4.23 miles @ 8:59

Was starting to doubt whether I was really making progress with my niggles with this run. Felt fine up until 3 miles in and then could feel the problem again. It wasn't nearly as bad as the previous week but still annoyingly there.

    Friday 8th March
    4.15 miles @ 8:51

It was quite cold out for this one. A nice hail shower at one stage too. Pace picked up a little more to warm up than anything else. Still wasn't over niggles.

    Sunday 10th March
    4.25 miles @ 8:53

Didn't manage to get out on Saturday morning so used the time on Saturday instead to look for some more stretches to target the problem. Found one in particular that I could really feel when doing it. Repeated this a few times during the day. Headed out very early on Sunday morning with a view of just testing if the stretching had made any impact. Same as last Saturday done a couple of laps of the two mile loop. I was just waiting for the twinge to come on but it didn't. Repeated the stretches a few more times.

    Week Summary
    No. of Runs |Week Total|MTD|YTD | Weight
    5|21 |35|221|88.6 kg

    Monday 11th March
    4.16 miles @ 8:21

A bit cold out there today to say the least. Legs seemed quite eager from the start. Just seemed like there was that bit more power in them than recent runs. Probably the best run I have had for a few weeks. Fingers crossed but I think the targeted stretching has done the job this time.

Might be able to plan for a race or two now.

One stretch i can recommend is to wrap a towel around pads of feet and pull. its great for the calves. also do it with legs slightly bent as well ss legs straight whilst sitting on the ground with back straight

Be careful when doing that stretch that it doesn't put too big an impact on the knee. If lying down. Pull the towel back as if you were going over your head for the stretch rather than directly down. Lessens compression on the knee.

Don't confuse the man...i just said to him to sit straight doing the stretch The stretch has no impact on the knee what so ever unless he does it the way you explain :D

A matter of fact it does! :P If sitting up while doing it one should pull slightly upwards rather than towards yourself. As doing such a thing compresses the knee. Probably need a video to explain properly but not a hope I'm doing that!

You've way too much time on your hands buddy...maybe a video is what you need to do to keep yourself busy :D

Thanks, think I know the one you are on about, have done it a couple of times.

The one that worked for me was this one

    abductor-stretch

Havn't tried that, all my aches and pain revolve around my ankles and calves. I'm doing some serious stretching and the only one that really gives me relief is the one I told you there. I'm using the stick as well, it doesn't seem to be doing much for me as I'm still suffering after use but it does have a nice massaging feeling when using it.
Might give your one a go next time I'm stretching, see if it does anything for me.

    Wednesday 13th March

    6.87 miles @ 9:15

Didn't get out yesterday at lunchtime due to work which was annoying as it was a lovely day out.
Decided to go a bit longer with the run this morning to see how things held up. Conditions weren't great with footpaths and roads very slippy in places. Felt a bit of tightness in abductor region near the end of the run but nothing major.

    Thursday 14th March

The rain quite conveniently stopped as I headed out for this one. It got quite warm out there, was glad I hadnt put on any extra layers. No problems in the legs either thankfully.

    4.24 miles @ 8:29

Was lucky with the weather yesterday, not so today. A nice headwind mixed with hail showers was the order of the day. And now the sun is shining in the window teasing me! On plus side legs felt good once more.

Fingers crossed legs will behave themselves for a while.

Have earmarked a 10k on 20th of April locally. Have seen another 5k race on 5th of April that I might do too. Have planned a few different races and not made the starting line already this year so just want to get out and run one to get that first one out of the way.

Long term think I might target the Athlone half in september and do a few shorter ones over the summer.

I see your down for the GIR, any targets timewise?

You should get under the 50 mins for the 10k i'd say.
Are you leaving the marathon this year?
I'm not sure how that race will go, i feel like I havn't improved since i've not been doing any speed sessions. Still its consistant I suppose. Hopefully I won't be any worse than last year or that would be soul destroying.

Yeah sub 50 would be the plan for this one and then try and improve on that later in the year hopefully. The thinking about doing the 5k before it is really to test where I'm at.

No plans for a marathon this year. Would like to build up a better base and get used to doing some sessions before try a marathon plan again.

I reckon you should get a PB alright. Your PB time is a bit quicker than mine and we both have a marathon cycle done since then. I know you were out for a while but that base must still stand to you. It will let you see where you are anyway.

Had expected to be woken be our little natural alarm clock to get up for this. Luckily I woke myself anyway because little fella still sleeping.

It was frosty out this morning but no ice thankfully. Felt a little tightness in leg for last two miles but other than that it was pretty comfortable.

Twas quite refreshing out there to say the least. A few times I felt as if I was on an outdoor treadmill, the legs were moving like I was running but I wasn't going anywhere.
