Traditionally earlies go in around st Patrick's day. Main crop from middle to the end of April, or even later. There's no hard or fast rule, but soon, once we get over the coming cold period I would imagine.
As for varieties, there are so many. What do you like to eat from the supermarket?

If it was my first year again what I would do is buy three or four seed spuds of as many varieties as I liked the sound of. There are plenty of spud sites online, a lot are garden shops but they give you good info on taste, yield etc.
