Farm trailers and machinery - need licence plate?

I'm not here to antagonise or be critical of farmers or pass judgement but I just want to know are Farmers meant to have a correct licence plate displayed on their trailers/machinery when being towed on public roads or do they have exemptions?

For a trailer, aslong as a plate is from one tractor in the yard that is grand. Law is very loose for plates so for me aslong as lights, indicators and the trailers are in a road going conditions Im happy and would never bother to look at plate.

I believe tractor trailers are exempt for some reason from number plates... not sure why I think that but nearly sure its correct

Licence plate.... pifffffffff..... ?

When you become a farmer the government grants you a special dispensation that allows you to:

- Drive the roads late at night without a stitch of a rear light (big glaring work lights are optional)

- Hold the road and allow a big convoy of cars to build up behind you while you look cool bobbing up and down listening to the radio and talking on the phone.

- Put a big dirty black barrel out in the middle of the road to slow down traffic (even at night) when silage making or putting out slurry.

- Drag as much sh1t as you can coming out a gap and into the road.

Ah no.... only joking. Yes same laws apply to all road users. It doesn't matter whether your a farmer or not.

How is the law loose? Surely it's either a provision under the road traffic act or not ????

But you are sure that a farmer pulling a trailer or other farm machinery MUST have a licence plate the same as the tractor unit attached to the trailer or piece of farm machinery?

whatever the law states, its just good practice to have plates, lights and reflectors present and working.
some people have common sense, some don't

Yes prob hard to believe that someone isn't knocking a farmer that isn't actually a farmer.

I do drive a lot around Ireland and have often wondered the law and have to be honest that IME around 20% or less of trailers/farm equipment being towed have a licence attached..

That's a good link. I winder is it still fairly current as it's 10 years old at this stage.

Often thought that each farm should have a licence plate, i.e. Kildare farmer could have KE 237 & fit the same place to all trailers, seed drills etc

How many people swap plates when drawing corn etc away from the combine with multiple trailers & 1 tractor.
