John Giles and Graham Hunter on OOO now, no loyalty in radio broadcasting, no surprise there after Sam Smith got the bullet on TFM.

NT looking for a bit of showbiz from their next presenter and its rumoured it'll be Timmy Mac :)

no mention of american sports in the intro though.

graham hunter is on all at the weekends, and would probably find ger easier to talk to than ken. i'll miss ken disagreeing with him just for the sake of it though.

    We'll see about that.

I for one will never listen to either George Hook or any show featuring his Friday mate Dave McIntyre again.

I don't understand? Loyalty? Who do Giles and Hunter have to be loyal to? They are contributors on Off the Ball, the show, don't really have any loyalty towards the lads. They are professional and are doing their jobs....

US Murph has made reference to his "Red" credentials before when discussing strikes. I was wondering whether he'd...uh, pass the picket or whatever.

Thanks. I actually thought there was a picket. Now I know.

US Murph wasn't on this evening anyway.

Ask youself this - who is the winner in this whole scenario: Gilroy

He is a canny operator for sure. He was brave to make the move away from sports to breakfast. He did well there and was very harshly shafted IMO in favour of Claire Byrne for financial reasons. His career at NT didnt look very bright at that point but he went back to the weekend sports and editorial gigs and basically hid in the long grass, biding his time and grooming yer man Joe Molloy as the next Ken E. I'd say he was equally close to the management and OTB camps and knew all the moves in advance. Smart cookie.

will they perhaps go down the road of a podcast?

Gilroy is decent, i can listen to him.

But its not the same, but until a viable alternative appears I'll probably listen now and then but not as religiously as before.

Why wouldn't they be on? Seriously people, I love OTB as much as anyone else, but anyone who thinks the regular contributors to the show will suddenly give up in solidarity is deluding themselves.

What the hell has George Hook done*? Boycotting his show over this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

*I know a lot of people on here don't like/listen to George anyway, but that's not what I'm referring to.

I want someone to point the finger at for this too, but i don't think it's fair to blame Ger! They resigned at the end of the day. But the explanations we've been given are far from convincing.

Podcasts won't pay many bills (for an Irish audience anyway) although it might keep their profiles up for a bit.

I reckon the Lads will go their separate ways, sadly. They are all excellent broadcasters but no Irish media outlet could afford to take on all five of them at the moment. Maybe Eoin or Ken will get a gig across the water, but I can't see all marching into Five Live or TalkSport as one.

He's a winner if he doesn't have to go head to head with them.

Their statement today has made me certain that they'll serve out their gardening leave and be back on a national station in a few months.

So long as the format isn't tweaked too much, with the publicity they've gained over the last 24 hours and an heroic comeback they should leave Gilroy in the dust.

the show could become better than it's been before if they get the right people. i'm not sure if the 3 at the moment would do 7 day weeks for too long.

was quite funny on moncrieff earlier when they were discussing electricity and thomas edison stealing ideas. he was getting blamed for all sorts of stuff as the show went on, and moncrieff blamed him for the 5 resigning from off the ball!

*I know a lot of people on here don't like/listen to George anyway, but that's not what I'm referring to.

Firstly, he trivialised the contribution of the OTB team to the station and the braodcasting scene generally yesterday with quotes such as "gone off to pastures new", and "hopefully you'll enjoy the new team as much as the previous lot" (paraphrasing here) - I detected some support from Hook for the terminally boring McIntyre in those remarks also.

Secondly, I feel Hook personally has stood in the way of way of progress on this one. The talk about the station being unable to afford to lose Right Hook listeners is such flat earth thinking. If the NT policy makers were so sure of themselves, how come the whole project has never made a profit? Isnt is probable that lost Hook listeners would have moved over to Cooper anyway rather than Drivetime in which case, whats the problem if its all in the Communicorp family? On top of that you could expect to win listeners from Drivetime to a 6pm OTB. The lads plan wasnt as mad as some are making out.

In point of fact - didnt Drivetime try a split format some years ago with sports taking over from Mary Wilson at either 6pm or 6.30 until 8pm was it? It never worked but only because they had Des Cahill or Marty Morrissey types on the case. If RTE were prepared to at least try the format why werent NT and Hook open to it?

If everyone could do what the lads did, everyone would do it.

They made a fantastic radio show (in my opinion (clearly I'm a bit of a fan)) that won't be easy to replace.

I can't stand Hook but I can't understand any of the vitriol for him over this. The lads made their bed and they'll have to lie on it. The likely result is that they'll never work together again. Some of the five stand to gain a lot more than others. McDevitt especially.

you're being harsh on hook in the first part there. he's hardly supposed to say something like 'you can switch off now as the usual lot have resigned today, and the shower of replacements will be shyte'

on RTE though, they did start at 6.30 for a while, i think it was just during the summer though. i'm in the UK and used to be able to pick it up on LW in the car. this was before i heard of off the ball!

Which is the better gig though? The weekend sports show, afaik, has a fair few more listeners. For someone with a young family the hours would be more suitable. Given the choice, I'm not sure that he would pick OTB.

I stand to be corrected, but is Gilroy not the Sports Editor in NT i.e. the Sports Boss?

How is a jump from being the boss with a handy 2 days a week presenting to being on 5 nights a week and having the sports dept in turmoil of benefit?

That and I can see Dave Mc stepping into the football show, with Joe Molloy taking the weekend slot full time.

Raises his profile - loads of print media work if he wants it.

He is in complete control now in any internal sports department politicing, until yesterday that wouldnt have been the case.

Ken Early is live tweeting the United game.

That'll have to do I suppose.

Brave move from the team and I hope they find a new home. In my experience they were the only 'modern' show that I ever listened to on Irish Radio. My fingers are crossed for them.

I think they were wanting to try something new and the station wasn't ready for it (typically Irish). Will they find a nourishing environment elsewhere that will let them do their thing? Will they fit in amongst the desiccated 'talent' in RTE?

Although seeing Ken cohost a show with Craig Doyle would be something else:pac:

    Decent football show tonight.

I have to say, they were the sum of all their parts. Great as a team, but how will they manage solo? I guess it takes time to build up that 'chemistry'. I think they over estimated their value and called managements bluff. But, they're obviously seeing where the dice will fall. Will miss the show, but they're feckin eejits for giving up a gig like that. We'll all miss out. No-one's a winner here.

I don't mind Gilroy. He has a tendency to ramble on a bit when asking questions but he's certainly a competent sports anchor.

McIntyre and Molloy have the personalities of cardboard though. Neither are very interesting to listen to. Early and Murphy weren't everyone's cup of tea but they had very distinct personalities which added to the chemistry with McDevitt.
