Spent quite a few summers working in summer camps in the US... anyway during my first summer there my mate and I were given a cabin full of 13 year old lads -ragtag bunch from all backgrounds- all decent young fellas. One of the lads was fairly quiet and a bit withdrawn from most activities we had going on so myself and my mate would always make an effort to try keep him involved with the rest of the group but he still seemed so distant. One of the evenings as the lads were getting ready to turn in for the night some of our lads came from the shower block saying that the quiet kid was just crying and wouldn't tell anyone why. So we told the lads to finish up and head to bed and we took the quiet lad aside.
At first he wouldn't say what was wrong but we told him that whatever was up we'd sort it for him and there would be no hassle or embarrassment about crying. Eventually he began to open up a little to us and then lifted up the back of his t-shirt which revealed severe marks on his back which he explained his father would take a belt to him for the smallest of reasons. Me and my mate were in total shock and felt such pity for the lad, so we told him not to worry we'd speak with our boss and get him help. (Few days later CPS came to camp and brought the boy back to his mother (who was living out of state and was unaware of the beatings).

Anyway long story short, I was only 20 at the time and couldn't believe that a young lad could feel safe and would open up and let me help him. It was a really shocking experience for me but also I felt that I made a difference and it's something that I'll never forget.

Climbing cotopaxi and kilimanjaro were tough but very rewarding, especially cotopaxi. Crampons, ropes, crevasses, cold, and sheer exhaustion in the end but fun all the same. Also, the w trail in torres del paine was the most awesome scenery ive ever come across. A jewel of a destination.

Swimming with seals in the galapagos was cool as well. They would play with you in the water. Favela tour in rio, glacier hiking, whale watching, theres loads of good stuff.

Closer to home, i love doing adventure races or a triathlon even if i am a brutal swimmer. They are usually great craic. For sheer thrills you cant beat a rollercoaster. Nemesis in alton towers was the best fun ever. The big ones scare the crap out of me like that pepsi max big one in blackpool. The drop nearly gave me a heart attack. I should have worn a nappy on that one.

Id love to team up with those storm chasers to try catch a tornado someday.
