So, what is your experience. I live and work over 6 years here and I am not sure if I am just not lucky, but every single employer I worked for was selfish, simple minded and greedy person.
I am very reliable, always punctual, educated person with common sense and always when I stated new job I was full of enthusiasm and commitment -what I got in return - little or no respect, no rise in salary and in general nobody ever appreciated my work and efforts.
I am just disappointed and bit frustrated at this point.
Why is it so hard to find fair and good employer here?

How would you compare it to your own country, what were your bosses like there?
Do you think Irish bosses treat Irish people better?

No, I don't think so. Maybe once it happened that I should got promoted and someone irish who knew less than me and was sometimes late and not good for the job was,but in general I don't think so.

Ya, they probably are, but, most business people are barely surving , they have plenty of overheads, expensive lifestyles (one must keep up with the Jones' afterall), and, most importantly, they are running a business for profit, they are not running a socialist movement or a charity. The less they have to pay, the bigger they get. They are out for themselves. It just happens that many of them employ Irish people who then get to enjoy a moderate lifestyle via wages.

Again, as you know, it is a business , not a charity. Bonuses are rare, you know this. I am sure, no matter how brilliant you are, these guys think that you (and anyone) is not irreplaceable

I am sure you understand why many trive to become their own bosses (if they can)

Ah, some are alright, but don't expect much now. Sure aren't we all meant to hate our employers? Avoid Christmas Parties, you really see the really bad side of most of them

These are words of wisdom. However some places will hold it against you if you avoid the Christmas party.

(How are we defining "small business" for the purposes of this thread, btw?)

5 :) (almost 7 years) First one let me go, when I was sick, second let me manage the whole place for minimum wage for almost 2 years - 6days a week, sometimes 12 hours a day and when I said thats it and I gave 2 weeks notice, she is not even saying hello to me when I meet her on the street. Nice

Take heed of the wise words of EDDIE Temple (Michael Gambon's Character) In Layer Cake (that film with Daniel Craig, very young Tom Hardy ,Sennia Milner, our own Colm Meaney)

"You're born, you take ****. You get out in the world, you take more ****. You climb a little higher, you take less ****. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what **** even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son."

True, but after a few years and kind of being "a law unto oneself" , you really don't give a ****e what the boss thinks, sure it is a few less quid of his bill, hey. Sure thankfully, there is always some birthday, anniversary, funeral (gulp) that crops up.

OP, I've noticed one constant in your tales of woe; you.

Whilst it might be easier to keep blaming others and looking for reasons based on gender or nationality the root of your problem may be closer to home.

Yes, maybe you are just right. Much to many- simple minded, dull and not very bright. I am simply too good for what I was doing and I was usually surrounded by people less intelligent and less open minded than myself.
This is it, I was never were I belonged. :(

It's your opinion you were better for the job, the Irish person might know less and be late a few times but he was probably loyal to his employer and was prepared to give a little more than was necessary.

You have a very high opinion of yourself and a low opinion of your co workers, not a good quality imo

What makes you think I was not loyal and I wouldn't be prepared to "give a little more"?

With what attitude? That is just true, this industry is filled with this kind of people unfortunately -talking more about employers, not coworkers..

Since I'm qualified to answer the original question, here's an answer: I haven't had any problems once I got used to their management style (which was different to what I was used to).

I'm a foreign worker too and was in the same boat. Once I knew what was expected of me, I was good to go. Management styles were certainly different.

no you're not, you're now trying to pull back on what you just said about the people you worked with, nothing about employers.

"surrounded by people less intelligent and less open minded than myself"

get off yer high horse! surrounded by employers? yea right.

This statement says it all really, you are not a team player.
