Key/immobiliser problem Kia Picanto

    I am having a bizarre problem with my 09 Picanto.

    I can lock/unlock the car remotely.

    But if I use the key to unlock the door, without clicking the button, it sets the alarm off, the immobiliser kicks in and the car won't start.

    In the handbook it says to turn the key to the "on" position and after 30 seconds it will disarm the alarm, and turn off the immobiliser - this is not happening. Unless I click the button on the key, the car is unusable.

    This is not normally a problem, but I am in a position now where the car is being shared, and the second key does not have the button on it, it just locks and unlocks the car manually, so that if the button on the "main" key is used to lock the car, only that key can be then used to make the car useful again.

    It's not a very practical situation, and I wonder can it be remedied.

    did you check to see if it would it fall under warranty?

    It out of warranty, i bought it second hand.

    Do you know what the problem is?

    warranty should be transferable if bought in Ireland. In fact probably transferable across Europe!

    thanks, i will give Kia Ireland a call tomorrow and see if they will look at it.

    i found this on the Kia forum, sounds like this could be the solution.
    I had that same exact problem!! Yes, you CAN get around it by locking the car with the indoor button, but then your car isn't armed by the factory alarm. Using the door lock with the key arm/disarms the facory alarm. How does it know the difference between the button and the door lock key??? Take the drivers front door interior off and you'll find your door key lock cylinder has a wire plugged into it.. there's a sensor that detects the key actions.. if the connection gets corroded or worn out, the computer misses the signal that you disarmed the vehicle, but it still recieves the signal from another sensor monitoring the door lock itself.. so it thinks there was an unauthorized entry. I cleaned my contacts and the problem went away.. been fine for about 3-4 years since.. suggest using dielectric grease where possible to prevent future problems while your there.

    The Kia 7 year/ 150,000km warranty is effective on all vehicles registered from 1st January 2010.
