I read through a chunk more of the chronicles of the Black Company and really started to enjoy it. The first trilogy vastly improved after book 1 "The Black Company", books 2 "Shadows Linger" and 3 "The White Rose" were pretty damn good.

I didn't read "The Silver Spike" yet (despite being written later, it's now considered book #4 by many). I went straight on to The Books of the South #5 "Shadow Games" (Croaker) and #6 "Dreams of Steel" (Lady). I enjoyed both of these for the most part, although there were some sections that were tough going, particularly in the latter. I'm not looking forward to Murgen in book 7, I've read some reviews on that and it sounds like Cook starts flitting all around the storyline. I didn't find the skipping ahead in book 1 appealing, I think this could be a tough read.

One other thing I am finding a bit irritating throughout the series is this: when you've got your almost invincible enemy down and out, make sure the bastid is dead dead dead. Way too many times we see this come back to haunt pretty much everyone, even the bad guys.

Finished "The Passage" awhile back after a lot of recommendations. Not bad at all. It seemed to drag a bit in places but some nice twists/scenes. I didn't dive straight into "The Twelve" which always tells me I didn't love it but I will do at some stage.

Also read "Caliban's War" which was great. Its always interesting to see a Sci-fi book based in a fairly realistic physics model (no FTL, all within the solar system etc). I look forward to the 3rd book in the series.

Currently reading Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart which is ok. Not blowing me away but its a different/pace style than my usual read.

Also dipping into the The Human Division by John Scalzi. Its a very unusual concept with the book released as 13 novella type ebooks every 2 weeks. I've only read the first one so far which was very similar to the previous books in the Old Mans War universe (not a bad thing at all). I like seeing publishers & authors trying out new structures like this (especially anything that puts ebooks first) so it'll be interesting to see how it works out.

Tempted to start the Black Company series myself, but I want to try finish off a few series before I start more.
Finished The Twelve last night, I enjoyed it more than The Passage, it's a decent read, but not as good as the hype around them.
Inkeeping with the apocalypse theme, I started The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.

This is what I get for not reading the whole blurb, and just the first few lines! I'm not sure where I seen the book first and put it on my list of To-Read, but at no stage did I notice that its non-fiction, despite a big "True Story" on the cover :pac:
It's interesting but reads more as an analysis or account, no extra descriptions unless needed etc. It doesn't really need them though, its a very good read as is.

Not really one for this forum, but I'll mention it since I've just read The Black Company: my next non-fiction read will be Tom Clonan's "Blood, Sweat and Tears: The True Story of the Irish Army in Lebanon ". I got it for my dad for Christmas after hearing Clonan on Newstalk - it was a fascinating listen, and sounds like a very interesting book.

Finished "Alloy of Law" and have gotten myself the first Black Company collection. I think I've read the first book but I can't remember if I thought it was any use.

Finished The Stars My Destination. Exceptional book. The trouble with reading a book like this is that it's all the more difficult to find something to follow it.

Halfways through the 2nd prism book, the binding knife. Really really liking it. The nightangel trilogy was bearable, pretty good at times, but like sanderson he seems to be getting better after each book.

Finished the The Hot Zone, was v.enjoyable and a good change of genre.
I started Midnight Tides by Erikson, and of course I'm completely confused and have no idea what's going on, or who is who :D

Ian Buruma's "A Japanese Mirror". Bit dated, was written about 30 years back but so far it's an interesting guide into the mindset of someone who's writing about the mindset of Japanese people :D

Yeah that book totally screwed me up too, you were expecting to be back with the bridge burners, ganoes etc and he introduces a whole new cast, magic and deity system.

That's as far as I've gotten in the series up to now but funnily enough have just started into it on my second go around the other day. Definitely appreciating it more this time around already, Tehol and Bugg are great characters. Eriksson seems to do duos really well in general actually.

Those 2 deserve a sitcom, they were the funniest characters i've read in scifi\fantasy by a mile.

Am 19% into 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. Is very good if you overlook the animal obsession. I know most of the animals are extinct now but I'm not quite so sure it would be such a huge deal for most people. Also, I'm liking the quasi-oriental feel to the movie much more than the lack of such in the book.

Am also(still) making my way slowly through 'Take Back Plenty' which isn't at all bad. Am 40% in. Is good, in a strange sort of a way.

I'm re-reading "The Colour of Magic" by Terry Pratchett :)

Finished Feast of Crows, a little slow, a little frustrating, a little overlong but picked up at the end. 2.5/5.

Dance of Dragons now, just 4 chapters in and I already prefer it.

    Its a painful Dance IMO

Read it slow as the next one won't be out until 2020 :D

About two thirds of the way through this now and it's definitely the least enjoyable for me by a distance so far. The Tehol and Bugg sections are the only saving grace although if I remember the
war between the Edur and the Letherii
has some good stuff in it.

It's weird how I'm not enjoying it because I think there are some great characters in it - the two already named, Gerun Eberict, Trull, Kettle and the thief whose name escapes me are all enjoyable. Think he spends too much time on Rhulad who is annoying, and on the
pretty dull relationship between Seran Pedac and Hull
and basically just takes way too long to get anything really going in this one.

Finished 'Take Back Plenty', and am still going with 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?'. Have also started 'Callahan's Crosstime Saloon' which looks like a nice little time filler for the odd moments here and there.

Reading "Dragon Haven" by Robin Hobb. As ever she's easy to read and she's doing a decent job with making dragons interesting.

Callahan's is an odd one, unputdownable while you are reading it, but a bit hard to pick up again.

Six GunTarot by some writer. Just finished the kindle sample and ordered the book. Some western mixed with mythology sonething like what Gaimen and Aaronovitch have done. Should be interesting.
Going give Wool a go in the meantime.
Also just finished a few Starky books by Bateman, always worth a read.

Haven't posted on this thread yet. May as well join the action. Glad to see plenty on the Black Company over the last coupla pages as I've gone on a bit of a spree of late and bought 3 of the 4 omnibus editions. Haven't started em yet cos I was reading the first Trudi Canavan trilogy and now i'm nearly finished the 2nd book of 3, of Freidman's Coldfire trilogy. Gonna read it to the end but i'm certainly not blown away by it. Anybody else familiar with it. This is quite a long thread!!

A few chapters into "Galactic Pot Healer" by PK Dick. Not what I expected at all theme wise... was sure the Pot reference would be to the waccy baccy!
Some bits of it showing their age (early 1970s) but an inventive half-bonkers read as ever from him.

Just finished Winter's Heart on my WoT reread, I think "The Lies of Locke Lamora" will be a nice interlude before the next installment of WoT.

I am beginning to wonder how good an idea my "year of the re-read" is!

After WoT the plan is ASOIAF followed by the Malazans and then ease out the year with Feist, Gemmell and maybe even the Belgariad, although the Black Company is calling also!

Can someone tell me which book to start with for the Black Company books?

    Thanks

Yep, I remember when they came out, winters heart was viewed as a blip but crossroads seemed to confirm that the magic was well and truly lost.

Both of those books were to be endured rather than enjoyed, but at least I know that there are goodies on the far side!
