It's not free? There's no real point to SSD mounts. The drives don't move, and they're basically indestructible once inside a case. I've left mine hanging from SATA cables in the past, and they've been perfectly fine.

the 500r harddisk mounts can be used for both 3.5 and 2.5" disks:

    http://lb.hardwareversand.de/resource?articleId=50915&size=2&index=11

/edit no pictures, but the R4 does mention having 2.5" internal spots too

I had mine tied to the holes in my case around the spot where you put 5.25" drives in with cable ties.

It's worked thus far but I've been worried that something might get bumped loose. It's also not exactly an elegant solution.

But that doesn't seem to be a problem with the 500R.

Just as well. I can add another SSD in year or so with little hassle and without having to look for something to tether it to.:pac:

    Thanks as always lads.

I've learned a huge amount from this forum in the past year or so.:)

I agree with this to an extent but I suffered from a loose SATA cable when I was moving my PC around. Took me an age to figure out what was wrong and when I did I felt like a right dope.

Long story short; its grand if you don't plan to move your PC around.

Well I wasn't actually advising he do that, just that he could. All I meant was there's not much point spending €5 on adapters and things when they can support their own weight, or be secured with sellotape, etc.

My PC keeps crashing and upon restarting it forgets its boot drive, I just get a black screen with a flashing underscore. I restart and go to the bios and select my ssd as the boot drive and it launches normally with no apparent data lost. This has happened three times today, first time since I bought it that its crashed. Already checked for loose connections no problems there.

Boot drive is a 64GB Crucial M4, never had any problems with it until now - assuming it is the ssd. It could be a motherboard or psu issue.

Anyone got any ideas? Can't find any similar situations on google.

Have you got a H61 (or H67/P67) board?

What you're describing seems rampant on these boards, especially H61; SSDs disappearing from BIOS. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a solid cure, but you can try a BIOS update.

Sorry, should have been more clear.
Its an ASRock P67, I've had it for over a year now with no problems up until today. I'll try a BIOS update and see how that works out, thanks.

I used to have a similar problem with my X58 and Onyx drive. Would happen every couple of weeks, in bouts of four or five times a day. Haven't had anything of the sort with my Z77/M4 setup though. I never did really nail down the problem, but I found that disabling fast boot (Gigabyte named option, not sure what the equivalent would be with the ASRock) greatly decreased the number of crap-outs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭FlyingIrishMan

Okay, BIOS is updated will see if that helps.
ASRock have "InstantBoot", but I never had that enabled so I just left it alone.
If worst comes to worst it gives me a reason to get a better motherboard :D

*Glances at Z77 Extreme4 that needs selling*

    ;)

Bleh, still happened. Although it didn't forget which drive to boot from this time.
Really not sure what the issue could be now, temps are all normal, everything is up to date, haven't installed any new software in about two weeks, ran virus scans.

Its seems to be happening almost every hour to the second, I can tell when its about, I can't open any new tabs on chrome, can't open any programs, I can still surf pages I'm on and it usually won't crash until I open the start menu.

it happened to me a few times with my vertex but then again that was a known issue, which i fixed with firmware updates

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭FlyingIrishMan

I'll see if there is any updates for the M4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

If it's happening once an hour, that could well be old firmware. I forget which version it is, but it was after a certain amount of on-time, and the drive would then force Windows to restart once an hour on a clock. That was three or four firmware revisions ago at this point though. You would have had to get the drive around a year ago (or maybe a little less) for this to be an issue.

Edit: Which you said you did. Could be it then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Yeah, I was just about to post the same thing; it's old firmware. After something like 1000 hours of running, it shuts down after an hour or something. I remember someone telling me a similar story about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭FlyingIrishMan

Well according to speccy its been running for well over 5000 hours (I leave my PC running overnight a lot due to bad download speeds) :P

I'm gonna wait until it crashes again before I install the new firmware, I don't want it to crash in the middle of the update.

Thanks for the help guys, very much appreciated, will report back soon :)

edit: Crash happened right on schedule, new firmware installed with no hiccups, lets hope that fixes it.

Why don't more people use crossfire? I got 2 7770's recently just to give it a go out of curiosity, and at stock, performance is very close to a 7950 at stock, more or less a single frame short - for almost 100 euro less (cost me €160 for the pair). I know the 7950 oc's like a champion, but still....I'm seriously impressed by my 7770 crossfire performance, and that's at 16/4x - would probably be improved at 8/8 or 16/8! Will try oc'ing to see what I can squeeze out of them.

I suppose another benefit is that I can tack on another 7950 later on down the road whereas you'll need to get another 2 cards or one beast of a one.

Then again, I'd imagine you'd need a pretty hefty PSU to run 2 overclocked 7950s.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah, a pair of them could drain serious juice. Funny thing is that 7950 crossfire doesn't scale that well in most current titles, whereas 7770 crossfire scales about 100% in BF3, 7950 in crossfire scales only about 25% in 2560 from what I've seen. Having said that, not a hope 7770 crossfire would cope at 2560.

And looks like updating the M4 firmware didn't fix it either, I guess my main concern now would be to figure out if its the motherboard or the ssd thats causing the problems.

Have you got another machine you could throw it in for an hour? Probably the easiest thing to do.

You could try booting into a Linux distro for a while, just to rule out any software or OS problems (though I agree, it's probably hardware).

You've updated chipset drivers and all that jazz?

I've got an old family computer downstairs running Linux but I'm not even sure if it takes SATA connections.

I've updated my motherboard BIOS, and the M4 firmware, thought the M4 firmware updater seemed very weird, I downloaded the latest one, opened it, accepted the licence and click continue then it almost instantly restarted and when it came back on nothing came back on the screen so I figured that was it.

Updating mine took a bit of time, AFAIR, at least a few seconds. Grab HD Tune (or similar) and check if it is actually detected as running the latest firmware.

Okay, turns out it didn't update surprise surprise. Still on the old update, however trying to update again it still won't work. So I found a guide on how to update it, shouldn't really need it but anyway.

    http://edge.crucial.com/firmware/m4/040H/Crucial_m4_Firmware_Windows-Utility_040H.pdf

I get as far as step 6 in that, but when my computer restarts instead of going to the Crucial update screen, it just boots as normal. I have a feeling this is something to do with the motherboard, I don't think it is recognising the M4 as the main boot drive and is cycling through the drives before launching, I could be totally off there but there is a black screen with a flashing underscore that appears for about 5 seconds upon every restart and this is the same screen I got when it didn't know what drive to boot off, so just a guess.

Tomorrow I'll try putting the M4 in the other computer and updating it through that one. Thanks for the help. :)

Just in case anybody else wants to read it, seems to be the exact same problems I'm having except I'm almost 500 hours over the mark where it is expected to start happening. The 0009 update mentioned in the article is the current one I'm on.

I always considered off topic a place for discussing smaller things that weren't worthy of a full thread. I guess I didn't think I'd take up a full page discussing my issue but I doubt anybody minds too much ;)

It sounds like you might have boot info on another drive... do you have a mechanical drive in there as well?

I have a regular 1tb hdd but it's only used for games and movies, there isn't any os on it.
