Tee back in the original spot?

Tee back in the original spot?

It's probably 30 yards forward from where it used to be. They've put out of bounds down the left hand side down towards the 8th green. Good to have it back as a par 4 though. It wasn't half the hole when it was a par 3.

Played 11 holes in carton house Montgomery yesterday followed by 9 in Lucan. Shot level in carton followed by 1 under in Lucan. Was great to get out again after an absences. Happy with the driving and irons although the short game is very shabby. Month was extremely wet under foot whereas Lucan was in great nick.

played athlone saturday - level par for 15 holes again, but I was -4 for the first 7 holes and cruising. Putter was HOT! and it could have been even better but I missed an 8 footer on the first for a birdie.

birdied, 2, 4, 6 and 7. And then the poo started. Bogeyed, 8,10 and 11. 11 was particularly bad as I was only 110 yards from the green for my second shot and standing over the shot, thoughts of 'shank' popped into my head and i couldnt get them out, so I snap-hooked it to make sure I didnt shank it.

Parred 12 and 13 and birdied 14 to get back to -2 with 1 hole to go and then duff my teeshot on 15 into the hazard on the left. Double bogey 6.

As it works out, even if I had finished -4, I still wouldn't have gotten a prize, scoring was unreal this weekend out there.

Played athlone sunday - not as good. Shot +4, but just didnt get the putts I got the first day

78 gross, +6 off 3 handicap around Portmarnock Links today, 33 stableford points in the Monday open.

Looks like another .1 for me, after a disappointing day. I've been very lucky the last few times I've played Portmarnock weather-wise, but today was only average in that regard; it was pretty cold and wind was gusty from time to time. The rain held off mind you, so can't really claim that as an excuse.

My putting, again, was demoralising. I missed one from less than 2 feet on the very first hole and after my efforts on the greens over the last few weeks, I couldn't help but think the writing was already on the wall. Another tiddler slipped by on three and although a 12 footer for birdie dropped on four, it flattered to deceive, as I went on to three-putt the 5th.

I made a 3 and a 4 footer respectively on 8 and 9 to cling on to +2 which gave me some hope, but a very poor wedge cost me another bogey on 12 after a great drive. Ditto on 14 , after which I contrived to duff a 3 wood off the 15th tee, later garnished by a three putt. Double there left me at +6, and giving up three decent birdie chances on 16,17 and 18 meant there I would stay. 17 was especially painful as I hit my best shot of the day in there, a 6 iron to a front left pin with wind buffeting off the left to 5 feet, to no avail.

33 putts in total, but including a couple off the side of the green meant it felt like a lot more. I really think any round that includes a putting total in the 20's might yield something worth talking about; I hit some slack irons today but also some very good ones and my driving was again consistent. Will try again tomorrow. Literally, as the Links awaits once more via the Titleist Winter Series :)

Does Portmarnock have qualifying comps right through the winter?

Is it placing everywhere as a matter of interest?

It's snow joke it happens, especially this time of year with shortened tracks and preferred lies in place.

i know preferred lies etc, but 40 points for 15 holes especially in Athlone is some feat.

Placing everywhere, so someone who hits a decent ball but is wild off the tee will still be well placed. It's no good for someone like me who hits it dead straight because I'm in the same position as the 18 handicapper who absolutely flakes it off the tee.

And charlie that is not the best score this winter. we've had a 43, 2 42's, several 41's so far this winter. Even single figure handicappers are regularly breaking 35 for the 15 holes.

Pushed up tees ( WAY PUSHED UP ), placing everywhere, unbelievably good greens for winter time and mild conditions means its time for great scoring.

Just thinking, the holes where the markers are well pushed up. - This is where my drive finishes and I wouldn't be exceptionally long or anything, but I'd move it fairly well. [ for anyone who knows athlone ]

1st hole par 4, I'd be getting onto the upslope approaching the green pretty much everytime, driver Gap Wedge. ( Summer, Driver 8/9 iron )
    2nd hole par 3, 9 iron ( normally a 7 iron in the summer )
    3rd - 4th and 5th are all normal - though the 4th is playing as a par 5.
    6th hole par 3, 9 iron/wedge ( normally a 7 iron in the summer )
    7th - 8th normalish
9th hole, par 5, tee pushed up 50 yards. I'm hitting drive 8 iron most of the time. (driver, 5wood/long iron in the summer)
    10th hole, normalish
11th hole, par 4, Drive - Gap Wedge - ( normally driver, 6 iron in the summer )
12th hole, par 5, Drive, 5 wood - ( normally driver, 5 wood, wedge in the summer )
13th hole, par 4, Driver, wedge - ( normally driver, 7 iron in the summer )
14th hole, par 4, Driveable - ( normally driver, wedge/9 iron in the summer )
    15th hole, par 4, normal.

So that's a lot of holes where tees are pushed well up, combined with placing. It's fun times out in athlone!!

If anyone wants a confidence booster, I'd advise you to come to Athlone while its still easy ;) it wont stay this way for long......

    .....come to Athlone......

Fixed your user name there Ricky :D
I love the way you love Athlone, not taking the piss either, great to see someone so into their club!

Attempt to get back on topic... my last round was over a month ago, never posted score on here(was meant to be working on day in question...shh).
I broke 40pts (18 holes) off 18 for the first time ever, and it came on my first visit to a fairly tough course in Macreddin.

Was over the moon but I have not swung a club since!
Not even up at the range. New kid is talking up a lot of my time, hitting 40 was a goal I've had for the last year too, maybe that has lead to slightly less interest.
Really need to get into it again

Forgive late reply ssbob, but yes, all the opens in Portmarnock Links seem to be counting events. No placing or dropping anywhere so stands to reason.

Another average round there yesterday, a +9 80 off 3.

Conditions were miserable, quite breezy and bitterly cold with squally showers to contend with from time to time. Didn't putt quite as badly as I have done recently but still achingly average. I topped my tee shot on #1 and hit a dodgy enough one of the second but thereafter my driving was just about flawless, so approach work left something to be desired.

I was also unlucky more than once, so will take some comfort from that. 17 in particular was hard to stomach; having just birdied 16 to get back to a very respectable +6 total, I ripped a rescue club into the par 3. In mid-air, the shot was already receiving plaudits from my playing partners as it soared towards the front left-pin, but she came up literally 2 feet short of being stone dead and somehow managed to plug into the revetted face of a greenside bunker. Since I was unable to even stand up to hit it, I had to take an unplayable lie. Splashed out to 4 feet but missed the putt and then bogeyed 18 after another bad break left me bunkered off the tee. 2 pars would have got me in the buffer zone but yet another .1 is all I have to show for a tough day. Back to 4 handicap for me; paradoxically hoping that extra shot comes in handy enough to only have to use it the one time

Second round of the spring league today in Ballykisteen. Only played the 13 holes this week. I had 28 points for the 13 holes. 15 points on the front 9, 13 points on the next 4!

Hit the ball poorly on the front 9 but a birdie, par, par, bogey finish on the last 4 left me with a good feeling for the last few holes. Would have been nice to continue to see what I could have shot for the back 9.

Gross 89 for 38 points off 20 (19.5) in Druids Heath this morning!
Had 2 birdies, 3 pars, 7 bogies and 6 doubles. Placing everywhere and bunkers in play.
Very happy... expecting a cut or two when qualifiers start :-)

31 pts for 14 holes in Beaverstown. 2 over gross which I was pretty happy with for second time out since October.

This is my 4th year there and the only non counting round I have ever seen is our "Pink Shirt" charity event off the ladies tees.

One of the benefits of links golf I guess

Is it possible that you might have had relief? Because according to the definition below you were not in the bunker.

Rules of Golf: Relief from Bunkers Rules of Golf:

The definition of a bunker tells us that a bunker is a hazard consisting of a prepared area of ground, often a hollow, from which turf or soil has been removed and replaced with sand or the like.

Grass-covered ground bordering or within a bunker, including a stacked turf face (whether grass-covered or earthen), is not part of the bunker.

    What do you think?

35pts off 19 in Carton House (Monty) today.

Things were not looking good on the first tee.
    Moderate - Severe breeze.
    Moderate - Severe hangover.
Six weeks without hitting a ball.
2 topped tee shots straight into the drink.
Scratched the hole but it was to be my last.

Burger on the 11th tee was the highlight of the round.
Leaving myself 6 inches for birdie on the Par 5 8th came a close second. Pretty sure that's my first tap in birdie ever.

Fairly happy with all aspects of game today, nothing spectacular but nothing letting me down too much (some poor shots around the green let me down the most).
Avoided those bunkers out there which is a must.

    Missed golf, Love golf.

First round of the year today, just a quick 9 around Julianstown so nothing special.

Very happy with the short game, I bought myself a Taylormade Ghost Spider putter a while back and it has made some difference to my putting.

Long game was not so good, for some reason I kept hooking everything, not too sure what's causing it but I think a few hours at the range might be in order to see if I can fix that.

Overall objective for this year is to finally break 90.

New personal best for me yesterday in my club competition in Youghal.

    45pts off 19

    11 pars, 4 bogies and 3 doubles.

Absolutely delighted with that as I have been working hard over the winter. Hopefully there's more to come.

What condition was the course in? Has been very wet the last few weeks. Played O'Meara on Saturday and that seems to be draining a lot better than the Monty

It was still pretty wet underfoot in places, it could do with a a week or two of mild weather. Saying that, the fairways and greens were in good shape, it was just getting a bit cut up around the tee areas, still a bit boggy in the first cut of rough. (Had originally said short rough... but it's all very short out there these days)

The member I was playing with had a similar comment in that he thinks the O'Meara is in far better condition these days.
