Iceland is working on banning Internet pornography, calling explicit online images a threat to children.
'"There is a strong consensus building in Iceland," Halla Gunnarsdottir, an adviser to the nation's Interior Minister, told England's Daily Mail. "We have so many experts, from educationalists to the police and those who work with children behind this, that this has become much broader than party politics.
"At the moment, we are looking at the best technical ways to achieve this. But surely if we can send a man to the moon, we must be able to tackle porn on the Internet."

There will be an uprising in Iceland if this is to get signed into law :D

I remember when I was that naive.

    Good times.

It wont work. Theyre is always ways around bans. Take the Chinese government firewall that blocks sites like nytimes, facebook, YouTube and pretty much every popular site in the west

But people are still able to get around it with free software called a VPN. Likewise I heard new York times paid up to $40 million for a pay wall that you can avoid by using private browsing on google chrome.

Another policy thats good on paper. But never works in reality

    But
A member of the parliament committee studying the issue, Jonsdottir says a porn ban has "near zero" chance of passing parliament and that she's working to find other ways the government can help protect children from Web porn.

"Introducing censorship without compromising freedom of expression and speech is like trying to mix oil and water: It is impossible," she wrote. "I know my fellow MPs can often turn strange and dangerous laws into reality, but this won't be one of them."

Agreed. Considering that Catholics account for just 2.5% of the population in Iceland it's even more pointless than usual.

    You would think so, yeah.

It's kinda symptomatic of an increasingly nannyish social engineering experiment playing out in some Nordic societies. In a push for absolute equality and an egalitarian utopia of sorts, countries which once appeared enlightened and forward-thinking have kinda become a wee bit repressive, counterintuitive as that may seem. At least that's how it appears to me - I've never lived there though, so could be waffling out my asshat :D
