Using Ebay as a Dealextreme replacement

    Hey Guys,

This isnt really for any specific item but it's just something I've noticed over the last while.

I used to use dealextreme a lot for bits and pieces of adapters and cables etc but recently I have moved onto using ebay instead. Normally its the same stuff as DX but its actually a little bit cheaper.

When using ebay I set the following:
    Free P&P
    Buy it Now Only
    Location : International
    Sort By: Price

Some examples of items for comparison:

    UK USB wall plug
    Ebay ~€1.04
    DX ~€2

    OTG USB Cable
    Ebay €0.98
    DX €1.19

    DVI to HDMI
    Ebay €1.03
    DX €1.69

That's just a random assortment of stuff I have bought over the last few weeks, not a massive saving by any means, but better in your pocket right!?

For anyone interested I have been working on a site that is basically just this custom search of ebay stuff, so all you need to do is type in your search criteria and hit go and it will return items based on the criteria listed above. You still purchase the items through ebay, this just makes it quicker to look for them.

Its not ready to launch yet (still trying to figure out the name even!) but I do have a working POC would love if some people would be willing to give it a whirl. PM me if interested and I'll give you the POC url. Im hoping to have something launched by March (always good to set your self deadlines that you know you just wont keep :P)

Why not call it DealBay or something :-)

Cause anything with ebay or deal in the title is pretty much taken!

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

How are you using teh dvi to hdmi converter, what do you do with it?

I think I'll buy everything in that post thanks. Does the OTG cable work ok.

You're better off leaving out the free option and searching on ebay.co.uk, and sorting by price including postage to ireland. A lot of people will have the item for 1c and postage .55c or whatever the total price will often be less than the lowest with free postage.

You really need to look at searches from several ebay sites these days. I'm using ebay for 12 years its gone to pot, no more wild card searches, no 'located in any country/region' option, no sort by price including postage on some sites such as ebay.ie, ebay.com.sg etc.

Even the widest scope advanced search for items 'available to ireland' will only deliver a fraction of the items actually available to you in ireland if you perform the same search on ebay.com, ebay.co.uk, ebay.de, ebay.fr, ebay.it the mind boggles.

I buy a huge amount of stuff off eBay (read 10 - 15 items per month), and Ive found that 99% of the time it is cheaper. Interestingly though, any slightly larger items, its better off checking elsewhere. P&P on eBay for larger items (size of a book for example) can nearly double the price of the item. An example I can give is that yesterday I needed to buy a new pollen filter for the car. €7 on ebay, plus another €8 delivery. Off micksgarage.ie its €9 plus free P&P. So, its important to check the P&P on eBay, especially from UK sellers, sending to Ireland.

In relation to the name, why not call it eBuy? :D

Free shipping isn't always the best option to choose. The same seller here has the same product but slightly cheaper when you choose to pay for postage.

Wasn't aware of this, so thanks! I will have a look at seeing what I can do with including more than just results from ebay.ie

At the moment I am only using free postage as I want to be able to sort by price you pay. If I can get accurate postage costs back I could possibly total it up.

Oh definitely, I find Amazon is a cheap as anywhere for some items.

This is mainly useful for cheap electronics (chargers, cables etc), phone covers and other things like that.

I'm not claiming that it will always be the cheapest, but it will hopefully be a handy resource.

Its not an exact science, I've just found the majority of times that this is a quick way of getting the cheapest item (if price is your main driving factor). Like there is no point saving 5c if it took you an extra 5 mins to do the search (by clicking into the items to find out their postage etc)

For your example, if price is your main driving factor, my custom search returns a cheaper product than that (1m HDMI for €1.37) but you wont have it for 2-3 weeks as opposed to a couple of days from your links. (As an aside, if i was buying a hdmi cable: euro 2 sell 1m Hdmi for €2, Dealz sell them for €1.59)

I have not received the OTG cable yet (I only ordered this week). I also bought probably in error as i don't think the Nexus 4 supports it :P

As for the HDMI to DVI, It can be used for hooking your pc up to the TV or hooking a console up to a monitor (Monitor needs to support HDCP though, most do I think). Could also be handy yo have plugged into your monitor even if pc has HDMI out as it would be easier to swap out a HDMI cable plugged into this than a DVI cable

There are other websites which are more competitive than dealextreme.
Why are you restricting your comparison to just one website

Cause dealextreme are the most popular?

The website im working on does not interact with dealextreme in any shape or form, it just returns a custom search of ebay items (based on criteria in the first post).

Im basically trying to turn ebay into another one of these sites. Is it always going to be the cheapest? Maybe not but, its always good to have more competition. People also trust ebay, rightly or wrongly, people would buy off ebay much quicker than buyincoins or focalprice because ebay are a known brand.

Out of curiosity, do any sites your talking about beat ebay on any of the above products?

Are you creating it as a spider search site?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

Im not sure I know what you mean, is it searching multiple sites and aggregating the results?

Not at the moment, just ebay.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers Posts: 13,449 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

Yep, meant multiple sites (amazon, ebay etc) and corriate the aggregate from them. Might be worthwhile thinking about it!

Its astonishing that ebay.ie is still missing this most obvious of features, it should be the default search.

Another trick if you do not find many hits for items is to put your location as the UK or another EU country.

You will see many guys in the US or australia etc who will not have Ireland specifically listed, but might have the UK listed, and would have no problem sending here for the same price if questioned. Of course if it originated in the UK it would be higher post, though once I did get cheaper post to here from a UK sellers, as he sent economy and listed first class prices within the UK.

Couldn't agree more with this. There are some UK sellers who just make up postage rates to ireland off the top of their heads. Just before Xmas I bought an car seat cover but had forgot request postage costs first as it wasn't listed. He sent me an invoice for £15 for the cover and another £14 (about €18) for postage and packing. The thing weighed almost nothing so I said I'd pay £8 and no more, at which point he cancelled the transaction (which is what I really wanted by that stage anyway as I'd found the same product elsewhere with shipping for £7)

OP I'd say all the good names related to Deals and Ebay are long taken. Even ebooboos.com (specialises in spelling mistakes on auctions -i.e no one can see them due to spelling mistake therefore low prices at auction) has been around at least 5/6 years and they couldn't get a better name than that.

Why not instead go for a name that is completely out of leftfiield but also memorable. That's what sites like Moonpig and FunkyPigeon are trying to achieve- like who the hell would forget the name Moonpig.com ?!

When buying the cheaper stuff from fleabay I tend to purchase more than one if the additional quantieis ship for free/much reduced rate.
Something to consider perhaps on a search string?

Its good to see what others are doing, but its not doing exactly what I want to do. Its sort by price first doesn't work correctly (which is the the most important part of what I want to do).

    UK USB wall plug
    Ebay ~€1.04
    DX ~€2
The DX one is 1000mA and smaller, the other is 500mA, some things may not charge at all, or take longer. The others were fairer comparisons.

DX also sometimes have similar or the exact same things under different SKUs, at different prices, so it pays to shop around in the same shop.

I would also have a little more faith in DX quality wise, not that they are great, but you see reviews and they will usually do returns on faulty goods with no bother. -not that I expect DX stuff to last a lifetime anyway!

This one for €1.26 is the same as the DealExtreme one

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/UK-Plug-3-pin-AC-USB-Power-Adapter-Charger-iPhone-4-4S-4G-iPod-/380536104100?pt=PDA_Accessories

I'd be surprised if they weren't the exact same as the DX ones

I haven't had any issues with the eBay stuff that I can think off

just wondering has anyone used aliexpress.com ? they seem to have a large selection of goods , including all the usual cables etc. with free delivery from China. A lad at work just showed it me today so before i buy just curios to see has anyone had any dealings with them

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,394 ✭✭✭✭Timmaay

Yep have found Aliexpress good! Can be slow enough to get stuff, and if you ship by Fedex/dhl you'll most lightly get hit with customs, but I had saved 100s on what I had ordered of that website.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,379 ✭✭✭peckerhead

+1 for Aliexpress, but count on 4-6 weeks for delivery, and (in my experience) a 50/50 chance of the parcel being stopped for duty/VAT, depending on value.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,955 ✭✭✭_Whimsical_

Is aliexpress quality similar to deal extreme or better ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭paddyp

The latest silliness I've noticed is that on ebay.co.uk you can no longer see what price an item sold for if it was a best offer sale, change the .co.uk in the url to .de and lo and behold it tells you what it sold for. Also the ebay mobile app with location set to uk returns items that the ebay.co.uk site never will. They really like moving around the furniture.

Be wary of cheap USB wall plugs. They usually output very bad quality power and can pose a safety hazard, in some cases they could also damage your phone (or whatever you are using it with).
