Metal in my brake pads?

Changed out my pads there (admitedly left the old pads on way too long). I just used generic shimano shoes and a couple of weeks into using them the back ones got all scratchy.

Again, because it came and went I've ignored it a bit

but finally got around to taking the pads out and the pads were full of slivers of metal, I guess off the rim?

It's never happened before and the rims are good quality rigidas. I picked out the metal, sanded the pads, cleaned off anything remotely rough on the rim and have left it at that.

Is this common? Is it a sign of any failing in the rim? Should I use better pads or did I install something incorrectly?

The shimano pads are made from a very hard compound material, this can cause the metal to flake off your rims that becomes embedded in their pads....I'm running Ashima pads now...

You can take the brake pads off once in a while and prise the metal out. I imagine the rims will last a bit longer, but I couldn't say whether this has a big effect.

recently got my bike serviced and since i got it back the front brakes are schreeching like mad how can i get rid of this squeking so embarassing when stopping. Is this due to the wet weather or something else. was wondering should i take it back to the shop and get them to have a look at it.

Did they fit new pads as part of the service? if yes...bring it back to the shop.

If not, fit new pads and clean the wheel rims.

what he ^^^^ said. Otherwise just adjust the toe-in on the pads yourself - I'd imagine you tube has a few clips on how to do it (can't check as I'm at work)

yea they fitted new pads front and back brake pads. what do i use to clean the rim. was a full service and new brake wires put in aswell.

I'd use a cloth to clean the rims with white spirits (assuming there alloy rims and not carbon) . Then I'd fit new pads and make sure they contact the rim correctly when the lever is pulled.

if that fails, buy a new bike!
