Weird Inspiron MousePointer/Touchpad Problem, only works correctly on Lap?

I've a very weird problem with my Inspiron 6400, I can't control the mouse pointer properly when it's on a flat surface it jumps all over the place. When I put the laptop on my laptop it works perfectly with no glitches. I've tried google but can't find this problem anywhere, anybody any ideas it has me baffled?

Could be a loose connection, which makes more contact when on your lap?
