Now I'm not a cheapskate - just to get that out of the way!

I've a nice, though not terribly expensive DKNY watch that needs a service. I was quoted €85 in Dawson's which seems a little absurd for a watch that cost about 150 a few years ago.

Ill be honest I know next to nothing about watches, so would appreciate if anyone knew of anywhere that would do it for about 30-50?

Ah TY, silly me not checking the sticky. :/

But would also like to know if others have had good experiences elsewhere.

To properly service a mechanical watch you need to completely strip it down, clean out the gunk in solvent and then run every part thru an ultrasonic cleaner. Each part also gets checked for signs of wear or breaks and the main spring gets checked to ensure it still has some 'spring' left in it.
Then the watch gets reassembled, pivots get oiled and it gets rated.
A good watch fixer can do all that in a couple of hours or so. And this drives the price of a service/overhaul to about €120-160.
In my opinion anyone doing it for much less than that is just removing the movement from the case (whole), dunking it in cleaning solution and putting the thing whole in the ultrasonic cleaner.
This is like trying to wash your feet with your socks on. You can get your feet wet this way - sure, but you will never be able to remove the gunk between your toes!
What all this means is that yes, sometimes a service will cost more than the value of the watch.

Note: I have no idea how they service a quartz watch!

Not only is the watch not cleaned properly, but how is the watch oiled correctly, how do they get the heavy grease onto the barrel pivots inside the watch?
A quartz watch is serviced the same ,but obviously the electronic parts are not immersed in the liquid, most quartz services are movement exchanges anyway.

Your DKNY would have something like this in it http://www.watchpartssupply.com/miyota-2005-movement-p-1177.html
and should take about 15 minutes to half an hour to change out.
