Outrage at TDs going to the Dail bar, but no credit whatsoever for TDs working through the night.

No.... What we are doing here is showing our outrage for our elected representatives showing disregard for the public that put them there by going to the bar for a few pints when they should be discussing and arguing what is best for us... Why on earth is there even a bar there in the first place? Do we really want our politicians making rash decisions after a few drinks? And how many other government buildings around the world have bars in them? It's doing our image as drunken Irish no favours

. . . by going to the bar for a few pints when they should be discussing and arguing what is best for us...

Only problem with your point is that the TD's were actually in the chamber debating the bill. Were you not following proceedings?

The bar shown in the picture is the visitors bar, which had *shock horror* visitors in it last night. Not one person in the picture is a TD.

Dammit, and I'd just gotten my pitchfork nice and pointy.

You would be doing very well if you managed to get into the private bar to take a photo... This does not mean that members of parliament where not there between breaks in proceedings... Not matter what you have to say negitavely about Gerry Adams I very much doubt he would have made the comment he did in the dail last night without merit.... Do you think it's acceptable that duly elected members of state should be allowed drink on the job.... Especially when something as serious as what was happening last night was on the table? Maybe we should just scrap the dail all together to save a few quid and move all governmental debates to the baggot inn instead

Well, considering the members bar is just at the back of the visitors bar it is very easy tell when it is busy - which it wasn't last night while the house was sitting, and when Adams made that comment.

All you had to do was look at the live feed from the house to recognise that it was pretty much full when taking into account those deputies who were paired. Adams was merely just trying to get a cheap sound-byte in, it plays to his target audience too who are not interested in facts but who just want to always presume the worst.

Of course it was empty when the comment was made.... The dail was in session!!! The comment was that if the bar was closed then maybe there would not be so much jeering and shouting when the dail resumed.... The way or political representatives conduct themselves in the dail over the last number of years is deplorable. It needs to be stopped now. How can you have a civil debate when the oppostion shouts and jeers over you so you can not make a statement... This does not happen in any other country.... If the bar was closed to members maybe we would have less boisterous attempts to distrupt proceedings

I would say that the majority of those jeering hadn't taken much drink - although I don't know if that makes the situation better or worse!

There is a problem with government backbenchers trying to shout down the opposition, but I wouldn't be so quick to link it to drink. I would be more inclined to think that some deputies are just acting like gurriers which shouldn't be acceptable.

I'm not surprised it was packed, what with the vote and all.

TBH its a bit unprofessional to have a private bar attached to any form of Government office particularly one as senior as The Dail in fairness.

Doesnt set a great example or set a good appearece for our governments public immage considering how the sterotypical Irish culture image is one of drunks. It'd be like the Australian parliment building having a deck with a BBQ attached to it and a cooler of Fosters!

Booze has no place being assosiated with governement buildings or establishments in any way shape or form.

British parliament and house of lords is a constant shouting match, Canadian house of commons nearly descended into a brawl in December because they were about to beat the hell out of each other, Indian parliament is so bad for it that it has been addressed this month by a think-tank about political policy, and they're just what I got off googles first page while I was looking for an article about the Ukranian parliament exploding in a riot in December.

Well at least we agree on something ... But to be honest no drink should be tolerated when they are there doing there job.... Would you find acceptable for a bank manager and his staff to of not taken much drink when they were dealing with your banking needs... Or how about our doctors and nurses having a few quite ones before they go into work to save lives

Go take a look at stormount... Those people were killing each other for years but they can still manage to have a civil debate nothing like what goes on in Dublin

It wouldn't be hard to believe that government politicans are just like the average Irish citizen and like a drink from time to time. Forget about booze being associated with the government, because if they don't drink at the dail bar then they'll only drink somewhere else. I'm not that bothered about them having a bar of their own, just that they continue to do their jobs.

They probably don't even notice paying that much from their huge wads.

I totally agree but we dont need to promote that by having a bar attached to our primary governemt building.

The House of Commons has four, I don't think it's that unusual for there to be a bar in government buildings.

Its pretty standard to have a bar in a Parliament building and I don't see what the problem is.

It wouldn't be easy for a few politicians to sit down for a few pints in normal bars without being pestered by people or to bring in visiting people from other countries for a drink without having to drag loads of security etc.

been in the bar many times over the years, there are always tds in there come evening.

drinking on the job then a dash back when the bell starts ringing

the point Adams was making is that you wouldn't have gob****es heckling as much if they weren't blathered

They wear a suit to present themselves well as they are a voice and leader of the country, they should be representing us all and thus should be professional. Having a bar attached to a government building is not very professional. I don't believe it's because they don't want to be pestered. Also for entertaining foreign diplomats? do they need alcohol to do that? No wonder the country has a problem with alcohol if our own leaders have such a dependence on it.

Wow thats a bit harsh no ? Like Taliban harsh ?

I don't have a problem with there being a bar. However I do have a problem with paying for it!

But its not just Ireland, its a common thing around the world. Having a bar attached to a government has no bearing in professionalism.

Drink and entertaining go hand in had. Do you not think that politicians are not filled up with wine in France and Italy on visits, of course they are.

From previous posts I can tell you are anti-drink so of course you will come out against this.
