I've always hated text speak. Even before I had a smartphone I used to spell the words out fully and I even used commas and apostrophises. How sad is that?

It must have cost you a fortune in the early days. I actually don't think that txt spk is too bad when you're just writing 160 character messages between friends, saving space is the most important thing & so long as the text is understood by the recipient that's ok. It's when you start using it in other areas where you have room to spell things properly that there's a problem. I've been told by several teachers & even a couple of lecturers that many students think it's ok 2 rite lyk dis in essays & exams. Don't know how widespread it is overall though.

While text speak might be decreasing, peoples general grammar and spelling has been disgraceful. I don't know how many times I've seen the word "college" spelled as "collage".

I was seeing this girl, and when she'd get drunk, she'd text looking for a bit.
    Her: m lukn 4 ye
    Me: Aarr
    Her: wat?
    Me: Yea hop on over.

*It's you not ye, you damn sexy pirate.

Devolving in this case though, is one right? huh? Is one?

One aught learn the correct usage of "one" before one presumes to employ it.

If you're getting annoyed about text speak, you really have too much time on your hands.

How does this make any sense? How exactly is time being wasted by experiencing annoyance having to read text speak?

Those swipe-like keyboards on phones are amazing. I dont like tapping each key, just swipe the letters. So much quicker.

The only problem I have is that cursing is a ducking chore.

That's finally resolved now. It use to get on my four king tots.
    One aught
Yeah, that looks like the right score all right.

Teenage girls and their wannabee teen mothers seem to be the biggest offenders these days

Text speak has been replaced by people just changing words altogether!!!!

Masso Girlo Locko Drinkies etc when i see **** like this i actually wanna stab these people in the face...... Also the constant ''bro'' gets on your wick after a while.

Trying to read some of the stuff on Facebook at times is like trying to do a crossword in Chinese.

Do you not have more important things to worry about?

I have a friend who seems to think that the words 'where' and 'were' are interchangeable. He told me before it doesn't matter which one is used so he uses 'were' because it has less letters and is "quicker to text".

It may be catching, as less has fewer letters than fewer.

Not at all actually. People I know still write like that on Facebook. In general, people's knowledge of correct spelling and grammar on social media is just appalling. That we have a term for people who point this out ("Grammar Nazis") but nobody bats an eyelid at adults who don't know the difference between your/you're or there/their tells you that the battle was lost a long time ago.

Came across this quiz in the Guardian a few days ago, testing grammar & punctuation. Got 13/14 correct myself, which I was pretty happy with, though I did guess a couple of them, having never studied "clauses" too well. I wonder how the average Boardsie would do. I shudder to think how the average Facebook user would get on.

Not sad at all. I've been doing that for over 10 years, since I bought my first phone. I did power through credit like there was no tomorrow. Thankfully, the advent of free texts put an end to that problem, and I was free to send texts that were three and four messages long because I spelt every single word correctly.

No now its just made its way to Facebook. Have seen "you" spelt as "yhu" a few times. If you do this, you are retarded.

The one that gets me is when people spell it "yhoo". I get that text speak is to shorten words, so why would you go and make the word longer

Don't think the average text speaker comes across anything in the Guardian.

I remember seeing on the nidge weasels facebook page after poor Darren got killed (RIP Darren) one mentally challenged individual threatening to string nidges ballz up on the seeling.

There is strong evidence of severe retardation of the english language in this country.

Surely the fact that he threatened a fictional character is more worrying then the fact that his spelling was below par?
(and by extension, the fact that you have just offered condolences for a fictional character)

    I remember one of my mates was selling a bike and posted it on Facebook, someone replied to him and said;

"Dern te meh teh see bk"

What the chap meant to say was

"I will be down to your place of residence in approximately 10 minuites to view the motorised bike you are trying to sell".

For fúck sake....USE THE KEYS THEY ARE IN FRONT OF YOU........PILLOCK!!
