Anecdotal I know but I've noticed far less of that "c u l8tr" nonsense since keypads have been replaced with qwerty keyboards.

This is a good thing. Now if we could just erase it altogether.

No now its just made its way to Facebook. Have seen "you" spelt as "yhu" a few times. If you do this, you are retarded.

If we could also get rid of people spelling things phonetically and factoring in accents, that would be great too!

"Big shout oot ta all mah burdz" and the like...

It's "cu l8r". Watch the spelling!

Which makes no sense because on a touch screen qwerty keyboard, to get the 2 you have to press alt and then the number 2. It made understandable sense when it was a case of 3 taps of the a button to get c and 4 taps of the a to get 2, but when you need to use the alternative keyboard, it negates the value. Add in the smart predictive text most smartphones have and some people are really revealing themselves to be touched.

I was proud to spell that wrong.

Back in the 1800's people complained about Carrier Pigeon Speak which was when one used an inferior pen to write one's message before attaching it to a bird and send it on its way. Many people felt that using one's fancy ink and quill was a waste and so used a cheaper version. Purists were revolted by this.

Language is always evolving. Finally going in the right direction again I hope.

Devolving in this case though, is one right? huh? Is one?

I've noticed less text speak too. I'd say it's:
    -less novelty
    -growing out of it
-the average Irish person is now experienced in using phones to text, which makes it less laborious to write out full words
-the distaste that a lot of people have for it is more widely known about
-larger screens with smaller letters and better resolution means texts are probably longer now, so less encouragement for people to keep them short
-texting is quite inexpensive and text character limits are rarely reached so no one's trying to skimp on text length

No, now I just have to try to figure out messages full of text speak, predictive text errors and incorrect spelling caused by people hitting the wrong part of their touchpad.

I don't think being a fukkwit qualifies as a literary device.

Those swipe-like keyboards on phones are amazing. I dont like tapping each key, just swipe the letters. So much quicker.

The only problem I have is that cursing is a ducking chore.

plus, iphones have this lovely setting called "custom abbreviations" whereby you can set any combination of letters and when you type it, the correct phrase is displayed. the default example is: omw = on my way! but you can create as many as you like. so in essence, the person sending the text could have the worst txt spk imaginable, but the person getting the text is none the wiser.

*protip: as a prank, grab someones iphone and put in LOL as the abbreviation for "i need to get f***ed badly" and watch halarity ensue...

Swype is great and now with next word prediction trite platitudes are a breeze.

Sneaky dig and you know it. We didn't have a problem with you using inferior pens. We banned you from using carrier pigeons because of your persistent attempts at being humorous in situations that did not call for it. Your last one I believe was when we asked you to send an urgent message to the blacksmith in Westport regarding the dosage of medication his wife should take for her ever worsening tuberculous and you enclosed the following:
Hi William. Hope to find you and yours well but the chances of that have now diminished I'm afraid. You see, the pigeon that carried this message (which I'm sure is cute, lovely and cooing) is in actual fact no better than a disease-ridden rat with wings, which is most likely infecting the air you are breathing right this instance. To be honest my friend, it's really only a matter of time now until you and your good wife succumb to one of the many fungal or bacterial illnesses this sky rat is carrying. Ah I'm only messing with you, the Doc says she just needs take two tablets four times a day and avoid the hooch. Be well. Anono.

I have a friend who seems to think that the words 'where' and 'were' are interchangeable. He told me before it doesn't matter which one is used so he uses 'were' because it has less letters and is "quicker to text".

I wrote a text speak translator for android, christ i had a pain in my face with it by the end.Nearly impossible to get every word because you had to factor in typo's and the fact most of the people were probably illiterate any way before they bastardised the english language
EDIT:too lazy to fix my speling mistakes :)

Judging by the amount of people on Boards who make the same mistake he's obviously not alone in doing this.

I know someone who uses 0 instead of o in words i.e. w0rds. He reckons its easier for him to type on a touchscreen!!! No it's not you fool

I've always hated text speak. Even before I had a smartphone I used to spell the words out fully and I even used commas and apostrophises. How sad is that?

If you're getting annoyed about text speak, you really have too much time on your hands.
