There is probably a Harvey Normans and PC World on the outskirts of the known universe, with ample free parking.

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

The sheer scale of the thing is mindblowing. We really are nothing in the grand scheme of things, we're specks on a speck in space.

Nah, you get dropped off at the edge of the pegasus galaxy and then you have to get a shuttle the rest of the way.

So if you started off at one point and just kept going and going and going and going. Would you end up back where you started or would you hit a big black wall with a sign saying no exit?

    Fascinating stuff batman.

God damn loch ness monster! get your own god damn universe! Comin round here measuring our universe

    That crazy ol' monster

On a more serious note, just to give a scale to the size of things, astronomers found a region full of quasars 4 billion light years wide so in short it would take 4 billion years to just get from one side to the other, provided you don't get killed, or die :P

Also take a look at this if your really bothered

Right. here's the thing, the universe is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times bigger thhan you think it is, and that's just the known one, the unknown one is 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 bigger than that :)

    My head hurts.

Ok, so if time wasn't a problem or fuel for my massive rocket want either. What would happen when we reach the end? Is there an end?! And yes my rocket could make It that far.

Yes there is an end. You would crash in to a big stone wall in the rocket.

This website give a really good idea of how small and how big the universe is if anyone is interested. You can actually spend quite a while messing around here!

I'm not sure there's an answer to this. I don't think anyone knows if the universe is infinite in size or not!

    Wide IS across.

Another way of seeing it is the journey of Voyager 1.

It has a top speed of 62,000 km/h and has been traveling for 35 years. Yet, it is only leaving the solar system at the moment.

The solar system only makes up a tiny fraction of our galaxy, The Milky Way.

And there are an estimated 200 BILLION galaxies.

The universe is twice as big as half a universe. Its always good to simplify a problem. Now all we have to do is measure half a universe.

Who wants to hold on to the end if this tape measure....?

The universe is bigger than our visible universe, so "more of the same" until you reach "the edge".

Outside our universe I imagine standard physics breaks down.
Our universe is like an air bubble in a glass of water.
We can breathe in the bubble, but trying going beyond it and the rules change.

The greeks had this figured out thousands of years ago ffs. Achilles goes to edge of universe and throws spear out - spear keeps going. Therefore the universe is infinite.

Modern science has not improved on this thought experiment, well except maybe nowadays we might imagine Achilles in a spacesuit.

You cannot use a thought experiment to conclude the universe is infinite, even if you back it up with "ffs".

If the universe were expanding faster than the speed of light then we'd never be able to catch up with the expanding edge to leave it, so from our perspective it would appear to be infinite.
The edge would be like a carrot on a stick to us.

That doesn't mean it is infinite in size already.
