Really looked like Mayo need O'Connor back ASAP with the quality of the free-taking on show in Ballyhaunis. Likewise the invention Andy Moran offers that forward unit is the sort of game-breaking ability you need when your best free-taker is out injured so it's a double blow in a sense.

How far off is O'Connor, anyways?

Horan said O'Connor is soon to return. Poor free taking by both sides on Sunday do Roscommon have any one other than Kilbride,Shine to score them regularly?

Wonder would Keegan get tasked with being second option on free taking? He's accurate out of hand and you'd think he has the strength out to 50 yards. I'd say he could be decent off the ground as well looking at his general skills.

Donie Smith is a prolific free-taker from medium range. We were just as woeful from placed balls as Mayo but we seem to have been using the league to try out secondary takers, once the league starts it'll be mostly the two Donies and when Senan gets back he'll be taking the frees from his side of the pitch.

Shine's hamstring should be fine to go for the Sligo game, or so Evans says.

Anyone in Ballinamore yesterday with any updates on new players?

This year changes I'd like to see:
    - Higgins to wing back to bring his attacking play further up the pitch. He rarely loses the ball and is an accurate passer.
    - Keegan to centre back (I just don't think Vaughan has the skill or agility if our aim is to win out the championship.)
    - Possibly two big men in the ff line. New rules on square ball mean this makes even more sense. COS, SOS and Barry Moran the options. If Freeman could ever come into some form again maybe.
    - Aidan O'Shea but put a workhorse with him who can cover the ground. Maybe Jason Gibbons is the most athletic of the options. As someone pointed out Barry Moran was rounded pretty easily by Karl Lacy to setup the first goal in the final.
Tend to agree re Donal Vaughan,he tends to neglect his defensive duties, slight overfocus on attack. His lack of pace then tends to be found out.Having said that he is a fine, physically strong footballer. What role would you envisage for him?Personally I think Horan will stick with him at number 6.Big hope for next year is that we can unearth a couple of additional scoring forwards,we are not that far away.

Donie hasn't been a prolific scorer since 2010
in fact, since then he's been useless

I don't know, Shine scored 0-8 against Mayo in the 2011 Connacht final played in probably the worst July conditions ever and when Roscommon beat Armagh last year he scored 0-7 of the 1-11.

Clearly someone needs to re-read the post to find out who was being talked about.

On Shine, he was fantastic in 2011 and only a blind man could tell you any differently. Go back and watch the highlights of Tyrone, Leitrim or even Mayo and show me any differently before you even attempt a comeback.

He had a down year (and yet he stilllast season but how predictable is it that the boo-boys comes pouring out of he cracks when a high profile player isn't on top form? Have some dignity for the sport and for the sheer work inter-county players put in. Shine isn't some prima donna, has always represented the county well and deserves more credit than people like you give to him. People seem to instantly assume because the media want to interview him (hint: carrying a team to an upset Connacht title, starring on a minor AI-winning team and living in Dublin tends to have that effect) he must be some fame-seeking head-case you need to knock down a peg or two.

Kilbride is a better forward but to try and portray Shine as useless is simply laughable.

Hard luck to Charlestown today. Lost to Cookstown 1-08 to 1-7 the game went to extra time and only one score in 20 minutes was enough to win it.

There'll be plenty of regrets in the Charlestown camp tonight, they really should have won this game, never mind drawing it at the end. Feel terrible for the lad that missed the free at the end but it sounded like the Tyrone boys got away with their usual tricks. Sport can be cruel.

The poor conditions didn't help matters either.

Tough on Charlestown, fancied them for the AI on their intermediate detour. Will probably be immediately challenging for the Mayo senior title again this year, they're certainly not very far off the pace.

Interesting to see how Mc Loughin gets on at corner forward tomorrow against kerry. He could be a nightmare to mark with his pace and vision

He'll surely be out the field with the half-forwards dropping deep.

Delighted with the win. Sure Kerry didn't really show up but Mayo played well.

Just back, very good performance, they looked very hungry which I didn't expect this early on. Very promising indeed.

Mayo were alright,, nothing too inspiring i thought tbh! They looked sort of lazy and werent willing to run on( bar in some parts of the second half) or make space. I thought doherty and keegan were pretty poor especially for this! Accuracy was good however and cafferky, o'shea, cunniffe, feeney all had good games..

All in all, decent team that will improve greatly once fully fit!! Already booked the hotel for september :D

Michael Conroy and Richie Feeney had storming games today. Going by today the omens look good for the year.

Kerry were terrible though, have they ever had a scoreless 2nd half before?!

Yip I was wondering the same thing myself?Decent first outing against quite a weakened Kerry team.Should have won by a bigger margin.Defensively very sound,Cafferkey was superb, midfield decent.Still grave concerns re scoring power,Conroy was excellent, showed very well for the ball, took his scores well.At times the delivery was simply a long ball without any great sense of direction or movement inside.Still can't fathom out mcLaughlin inside, the half forward line is where he does all his best work,he tended to drift out there anyhow. Not convinced Lee Keegan is a half forward in the making.Richie Feeney really stood out today,Varley tagged on a couple of lovely scores. It does not appear James Horan has unearthed any hidden gems for the foward lines.Thought the referee was very poor today.

Early days but thought Doc had a superb game, Feeney was a total workhorse and Conroy was very very dangerous. Varley pinned 2 lovely scores. Midfield wasn't bad.
Defence were extremely tight, hence the fact Kerry didn't score in 2nd half.
That said I think I have never seen such a poor Kerry team.

Good perforance all round 2 day. Thought doc had a fine game as did mc loughlin and conroy. A o shea and caffery had fine afternoons also

Will know more about Mayo next week when they play Tyrone. Kerry were shocking poor today they almost threw the towel in once they went down to 14 men.

They were very poor alright, to their credit they had a weakened team out but mayo strolled it in the 2nd.
If horan can try players out in different positions yet still pick up wins then it will be a successful campaign.

Tyrone next Sunday, another two points will have us in a strong position, you'd have to fancy us to at least maintain our division One status

It's good to have the league back.

I don't like McLaughs in the corner and Keegan where he is. Barret I am still not sure about. Cunniffe did well in fairness.
Will Vaughan get his place back? When he comes back be good to have Moran back in, McLaughs in where Keegan is and Keegan back to where Barret is.
    Some nice headaches for Horan.

Thought ref had a poor game, not slanted towards either side but some of decisions were strange to say the least.

For all the money pumped into McHale park (elverys I know :D), but no time on the scoreboard, then the one on McHale road when tits up during the 2nd half and as for the PA system!

Who moved into the centre-back today with Vaughan out?

When you say will Vaughan get his place back...who would you put at no. 6 to replace him?

Colm Boyle came into the side, it was hard to gauge who actually took his position, I think Feeney seemed to cover it.

I would actually have Feeney in there in the backs instead of Vaughan, when we have Dillon back then that could move Richie back. Vaughan was our weakest link last season, too many fumbles which we didn't need. He may have had a bad run of it but if Cunniffe can keep his progression then Vaughan will be under pressure.

Not a bad start but the 2nd half was extremely poor.

AOS was excellent in the middle, as aforementioned in earlier posts; I thought Conroy looked very dangerous inside, he won about 90% of the ball that went into to him and generally used it well.

I thought SOS struggled against Kerry's no. 9 I think it was was (not sure of his name). The no.9 was elusive and got on a lot of ball with little or no competition.

Shane McHale was hanging out of the Kerry corner-forward for the day, I don't think he'd get away with that in Croke Park.

All in all, a fairly solid result and looking forward to next weekend.
