Once upon a time, there was a land of leprechauns, perceived as somwhat backward, but quaint, with more than its fair share of "characters", charm and individuality. This land then embraced eeoooww, and recieved vast wealth and subsidies, and new roads, and many new faces.

The eeeoooww brought many benefits for a while, and the people of Leprechaunia prospered. After a few years, the eeoooww turned, and showed its true colours, but the people of Leprechaunia had changed. They had become Modern, and had HMV, and Sony, and mocked "character" as backwards.

The tourists, who had flocked to Leprechaunia, stopped coming, as bungalows held no great interest over thatched cottages, and motorways were dull, monotonous Eeoooww style roads. There were too many people with nothing to do, too many enslaved to debt to pay for new cars and houses, and Leprechaunia was a soul-less place, much like the rest of the Eeoooww. Leprechaunia had lost its soul, which was all leprechaunia had in the first place. God knows, the weather was never much to write home about.

Is it too late to breed leprechauns?

I have one out the back, it's a male one if anyone has a female. Only charging €40 for a Luppy

We didn't lose our soul, we fought to get it back of the evil English overlords and then traded it back to them for Tescos and ferrys for cheap booze and fags.

So it was better back in the day when priests had the freedom to rape kids?

I live in the bog, surrounded by the last vestiges of the leprechauns. Most of them work for me, and I'll die trying to keep us unchanged, unbowed and free. And full of character. But we get to have a Chinese on saturday, no matter what.

Ahh, a "modern". The answer to, and cause of, all our problems. In Leprechaunia, the internet is hidden behind a pine settle, and only used after dark, when the tourists are gone home.

Don't remember those. I remember Captain Crisps, and Yellow Pack crisps from Superquinn- but that's probably a story for the "all things retro" forum :o

800 of those years ruled by Britain, which was just so darn good. The war of independence and civil war was just done for the Craic

Yer right. And so many people equate the boring polished risk free perfect life with regulations everywhere as being progress

I kinda liked it the way it was before the boom, tbh, warts and all. It was more fun, was for me anyway. I blame the hi-vis vest.

Somebody who I can't remember once stated that Ireland left one empire to join another. Anyone know the quote? It was spoken around the time Ireland joined the EC.

Star Wars? The empire is now striking back, and Enda Skywalker doesn't like it one bit!

Ming seems to have just wandered on to the set though out of nowhere, he's definitely in the wrong movie!

Here is another parallel that I see between the Irish and Indigenous Americans. In the US, there are numerous schools that have Indian mascots. These mascots represent the dominant culture's commodification of an oppressed group . They killed and ethnically cleansed tribes from regions, then took the name and "culture" of the tribe, and created tribal myths and heroes as the foundation of new communities. It's rather dehumanizing to be painted as a historical entity that has never made the transition into modern time. From the outside, I see insult when non-Irish, specifically Americans, look to Ireland and only see it as a land of singing, a place full of happy go-lucky simpletons who chase after rainbows.

There once was a land of lepruchians that had nothing. Someone came along and gave them something. Then they got greedy and wanted everything. Then it all went to shít and they were left with nothing but a bill. And they all lived miserable every after.

it might be a bit harsh to say that everyone got greedy. Young people were being made feel that if they didn't own at least one house, then they were a failure. Availability of credit granted these people a facade of success.
