I'd bet that if we discovered the amount of money being transported, it'd seem like such a trivial amount compared to a human life, a decent human's life that is. The sort of subhuman who carried out has a life worth nothing and will probably die at the end of a bullet. Those who live by the sword die by the sword.

Utterly shocked to hear about this. Lost for words. All I can say is RIP and to his family, friends and colleagues you have my utmost sympathy. The men and women who put their life on the line for the good of this country deserve the support of every right thinking person.

Adrian was a wonderful man from a beautiful family... and they're all in shock today and they'll need all their significant strength and character to pull them through this pointless and ridiculous scenario.

I'm personally loaded with anger right now but am trying to quell it as I try to process the surrealism of it all and will shortly go to visit the Donohoes.

I intend to print this thread for one of Adrian's brother to see the genuine outpouring of love from Irish society - not today, but when the time is right...

I've been crying all morning and all I can say is that Ireland lost today... The Donohoes have lost forever but we all lost something special out there in a pointless event.

He was the type of Garda that used judgement and fairness in his work, and the kind of individual that gives the gardaí a good reputation and Ireland a fairer society.

I'm not in the emergency services myself, but hold them all in the highest regard, and know that they'll all be feeling a huge sense of loss today and my respect is with you all.

    RIP Big Man

You'll live on in your kids and they'll have plenty of strong father figures with Alan, Colm and Martin always there for them, and plenty of others!

    Can't believe your gone,
    Nothing will fill that void,
I hope your in a better place.

    It's very upsetting news.

    RIP.

This is an attack on the whole of Irish society as much as anything else.

This is awful. A Public Servant shot in cold blood doing his job. I expect when next there is a rant re Croke Park etc it will be borne in mind who the PS workers actually are and what they face in their line of work.

    RIP Garda.

PS: Is there a reason the reg of the car is not in general circulation?

Filthy, rotten low-life dirt bags. Lip service will be paid by the government to rack up a few browny points, but what about the one who paid with his life? Will his fee buy anything to protect the rest of those who are risking their lives daily to protect us good folk and to pay the bills with very hard earned cash.

    Thoughts to the family

Sincere condolences to Det. Garda Donohoe's family and friends.

This is a terrible tragedy and one that should never have happened. I was going to say that it is a rare occurrence but sadly I can think back to a couple more cases where members of the Garda Siochána have lost their lives in the line of duty over recent years.

The government must certainly bear a good deal of responsibility for the failure to tackle serious crime and for not having the facilities for locking up these scumbags for a long time once they have been convicted. The judiciary have questions to answer too, when the sentence does not match the crime. However, at the end of the day, perhaps each individual and every family should be looking at how they stand on the question of right and wrong.

RIP Det. Garda Donohoe and God give strength to his family.

    RIP
Very sad news. A good man gone. These low lives need to be made an example of when they are found and prosecuted.

Hopefully the judiciary do their job for a change.

Heard this terrible news before I left for work this morning. My wife and kids got extra hugs and kisses before I left. My wife got extra calls from me today, just checking that they were all well. I am so happy that I saw them again when I came home from work. Extra hugs for my kids before they went to bed.

I am deeply deeply saddened that Garda Donohoe leaves behind a wife and 2 little ones who will never get to hold their Dad again, who will never have those hugs and kisses that I gave my kids today and tonight.

Sleep well Sir. Sleep soundly knowing that your children will never forget their Daddy, a brave, brave man.

My deepest sympathy to Garda Donohoes family and to all who knew him.

Yesterday, in the Aviva Stadium, St. John Ambulance members from across the country came together for an event as part of their 'relaunch' (which I'll detail in the vehicle thread at a later date). As the day began, a notable mention was made of Garda Adrian Donohoe, and all members stood for a minute of silence.

Today, at Drogheda Garda Station, the flag flies at half-mast.

Again, my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Very few photos upset me. That second shot does. Fantastic shot, yet so so upsetting.

I read about what happened to Garda Adrian Donohoe and like most people was horrified, but this evening as I drove past my local Garda station and saw the flag at half mast I realised how brave each and every member of the gardai are to get up every day and face whatever comes at them so the rest of us don't have to.

From myself and my family I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

    RIP brave man.

Someone said in an earlier post they would show Adrian's family this thread when the time is right. I just wanted to tell his family how sorry I am. I was lying beside my 5 year old boy this morning hugging him knowing that Det Garda Donohoe children will never be able to do that. All you Members should know you are appreciated very much by us, the public, the same people Det Garda Donohoe left his house on Friday to protect.

I hear shatter on the news saying he's going to the station and going to meet Garda Donohoes Family and colleagues.

Not sure how I'd react to that if I was stationed there. shatter is insisting there was no question of a lack of resources playing any part in what happened.

Can't say I see it that way myself, I feel there are direct and indirect resource issues that may have contributed to this awful situation.

As a member of the general public (but with family and friends who are and have been members in the past) I would like to add my condolences to members here on the loss of a colleague.

Unless you have some evidence it’s moronic for you to suggest the minister is not affected by this at least as much as the general public.

Actions speak louder than words and his disregard for members welfare is plain to see and had been flagged well in advance! He's only covering his ass at this stage!

To many politicians expressing their "shock and sympathy" at the death of a member, when there should be more "anger and outrage" at this murder.

    IMO

    management included

Prior to taking the photograph of the flag above, I was crossing the road towards the station and a patrol car was coming out onto the road. As we both waited for a car to pass by (clearing both our ways), I gave a small wave of acknowledgement to the Garda in the passenger seat of the Garda car (driver was looking at the passing car at the time). Surprisingly (to me, anyway), she gave a big smile and wave back to me.

The reason I was passing the Garda station in the first place was because I was going to photograph some hotel rooms for a brochure the hotel were making. This would turn out to be about 2 hours of wandering in and out of empty hotel rooms on my own, taking photos. As I was doing this, I began to think more and more about the Garda in the car.

It really takes some courage to be able to get into a car and drive out to god knows what series of calls you may end up with, knowing that someone doing the exact same job, a half an hour away, was mercilessly murdered two days previous, while on duty. To do it while being unnecessarily courteous to the average Joe Soap wandering the street is really something to admire.

My thoughts are with all the Gardaí who are working now, not knowing what type of scenarios await them.

I revert back to a post I made in 2011:

People are too lazy to do anything. Of course a Garda will eventually be killed. And then another. And another.

The shock will wear off and death will be part of the job description. (Of course this won't start happening overnight, but that's the way it's clearly heading).

Too many suspended sentences, incompetent judges and judicial system, etc. Pity we can't outsource AGS to some hard and heavy handed American Police force...

... but of course nothing will change.

I still agree with it. The judicial system does the Gardaí no favours. There is no fear in Ireland and there is no real punishment for the average criminal. If I were a judge I would be looking at 4 life sentences (no bail, no getting out after five years, no nonsense). In reality I expect 1 life sentence (probably do 10-15 years at most) and three slaps on the wrist.

I hope that, at the least, the death of Garda Donohoe causes a positive change in both the Garda and Judicial services. However, for this to happen, I do believe that both Gardaí and members of the public must make their anger known en-masse.

Apologies if this just sounds like a long rant and I don't mean to drag the tone of the thread down; but the news of this death, of a man I never even crossed paths with, still has me angered three days later. I can only imagine how ye Gardaí feel.

Stunning photo KKV. Don't know if it has been mentioned already, but a book of condolences is to be opened at the Mansion House for people who wish to convey their sympathy to the family and colleagues of Det Gda Donohue.

I haven't been active on the forums in a long time, but wish to extend my condolences and sympathies on the death of Det Gda Donohoe.

It is a horrific time for the country and I know that every right thinking person would assist in apprehending those responsible. The whole country should come to a standstill until those responisible are brought to justice.
