Paint for an open canoe.

    I have built an open canoe, and am now at the stage that I am ready to paint it. I am going to use a good quality under coat (2 coats) and will then give it 2 coats of paint.

    Money is tight and would like advice on wether I can use exterior paint or what do you advise?

    The canoe will be taken out of water after every use. Do I need to use a two pack paint or can you advise on a cheaper alternative.

    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi mlumley did you coat the canoe in fiberglass or are you painting straight onto the wood.
    Post a photo if you can I would love to see her.

    It has fibreglass on the joints inside to stengthen the joints, but not on the outside. I'll put a photo up later.

    If the canoe was built with solid planks you could get away with just painting it but if it is plywood I would coat it in fiberglass first to prevent delimitation.
    I would also go for a marine paint and primer maybe PRE-KOTE and TOPLAC it is a bit more expensive but in my opinion it's worth it as you will get a harder and longer lasting finish.

    Looks great and you could watch TV while doing it :D When posting or replying you copy image then click the yellow box that looks like a mountain scene then paste in the box.

    i used teamac marine gloss its good paint. a 1 litre can should get u 3 or 4 coats i got it in marinewebstore. here is a pic before and after with a lot of sanding between coats

    Nice job she looks great, I hope you took that cover down :D my cover got ripped to bits yesterday looks like it went through a paper shredder :eek:

    yea the cover is down only had it up for a few days.im going to leave it upside down for another month or two then im going to try to put some sort of pollytunnel over it.
