It's a psychological marketing technique. By having unique names for their drinks, they make people feel part of a club when they order them.

Its a club of scarf wearing man-baggers typing their novel on one of their homogenous macs.

I love the coffee, i hate the people the place attracts.

I don't like Starbucks full stop.....or any of those poxy poncey coffee shops!

Kettle. Sugar. Nescafe jar. Milk. - for a fraction of the price!

Nescafe is muck, most instant coffees are terrible.

Yeah but the staff have a terrible tendancy to snarl at you and look at you like you've twenty heads if you ask for milk.

I like starbucks, the bit of banter while they are making the coffee is fun

I would much rather go into an independent coffee joint, that has actual atmosphere, than the majority of the Starbucks I've encountered in Dublin, where everything seems so faked and forced; from their pained smiles, to the silly choices for names (it's ruddy small, medium or large!) and the having to remember my name.

    Starbucks for Iced drinks.

    Costa for Hot Drinks.

Costa's coffee is far far nicer, IMO. The put a lot of effort into training their staff as well, friend of mine works for a Costa and she was sent to the Costa Academy before she was allowed to serve coffee.

Never been in a Starbucks in my life, never any seats when I'm passing by the one on Dame Street beside the taxi rank, always loads of lads reading or on their laptops.

Usually just get coffee in Butlers or McDonalds.

Can't say I've ever been left with that impression from McDonalds staff. It'd be rare enough for me to feel in the mood for just a coffee, but if I do I'd always choose McD's over Starbucks... it's both cheaper and a lot tastier + they too have free wifi so I don't see the sense in heading to Starbucks instead. Each to their own but I'm guessing a fair majority of Starbucks regulars just like the idea of been seen in it more than anything else. It's the Abercrombie & Fitch of the café world.

Some coffee that tastes nice, free wifi and a comfy chair to sit on.

    What more do you want?

Not much more, but the problem is Starbucks don't have the first thing you mentioned.

I like that they gave me a free voucher for having to wait 5 mins. And then they gave me €20 change out of €5...

At least it's really easy to find an alternative in Ireland. Still a lot of great coffee places so people who don't like Starbucks can go to Simons Place, Cafe Irie or Brioch there are LOADS other independent place.

We should all give a little thought to people who have no alternative.. poor bastards.

I know its a chain, but I LOVE Insomnia. Perfect extra large/grande/whatever-the-fup-it's-called lattes. Unfortunately I have to wait for visits to Dublin to get my fix.

However, if there are any decent independent coffee shops in Dublin I'd like to know too.
    Tim Hortons is far better

We need proper Tim Hortons cafes in Ireland and the UK.

I like them too, and especially in the states, the atmosphere in their cafe's is nice, and relaxed.

And that's the Starbucks philosophy in a nutshell. You can get away with mass produced mediocre coffee if you can "sell" a lifestyle. Which is fair enough if that floats your boat.

Friends has a lot to answer for. Starbucks have honed this 'lets get together and slouch on a sofa drinking overpriced coffee' vibe, and it works.

I find Starbucks so-so really. I think their coffee is passable at best, but the atmosphere (artificially manufactured though it is) is okay if there are no other nearby alternatives.

I prefer Caffe Nero's coffee. They are everywhere in the UK - usually situated across the street from Starbucks! I'm sure they'll open at some point in Dublin.

I bet you just typed that on your mac, sipping your venti vanilla bull**** latte whilst browsing your blog ;) Palestinian scarf casually draped across the cafe chair...

But yes, I know what you mean! Fecking hipsters!

I did indeed lie.. sweating like a pregnant nun here from guilt..

    NOT

wish I did do that though...

    I'll revise...

When I go into Starbucks I think about giving silly names and never actually do it but it's worth the money just having that thought makes me smile to myself..

    Better Mammy?:D

I've always had the opposite experience with McDonald's. I always get offered milk.
Pity it's UHT milk, but I drink it black anyway. Their coffee is surprisingly nice.

It's worth it to be able to have that thought? You can think for free. Don't let Starbucks make you pay for your thoughts.

    .

They give a maximum of two milks (they used to anyway) It's not UHT though, it's actually mini lil tubs of fresh milk!

Topaz coffee isn't too bad either. Plus they have extra large cups which are wonderfully, ridiculously large.
