The gardai seized legal airsoft rifles. Can I get them back?

Last year I had some airsoft rifles seized by the gardai from my home, they were legal, the house had been searched on a drug warrant and after finding nothing but some confused students and their mam, the 12 gardas felt they shouldnt go away empty handed, so took the guns.

I was later told I would have to wait atleast a year and have to go to court to get my property, that I legally saved and paid for, back.

Is this true, and what will getting them back involve?

I should say the gardas had been informed of the 'drug den' by an angry local we had thrown out of the house the night before for been a bit of a prick.

I think you need to make a police property application to the court. If you ring your local court office they might be able to help you. Alternatively write to the Superintendent and ask for them back.

Having said that, have you tried just ringing the Garda and asking him if you can have them back?

With the greatest respect to the Gardai they are not exactly know for their lightning response times*. Neither is the court system. I find it pretty hard to believe that a warrant was obtained overnight on the say so of one 'angry local'. I'm quite happy to be corrected.

*I do realise this is because they are resourced and have better things to be doing.

It's quite possible depending on the circumstances.
