If its a waste of money then why is it the biggest selling combo box in Ireland ? Surely if the majority held your view then the box would not sell at all . As I said earlier I understand where you are coming from but to label the box a "waste of money" is hardly reasonable. Computers can access unsuitable material too but I doubt comreg have received many complaints about this.

It is a waste of money if I have to buy another box !
At least on the computer there is a choice and I can control what is accessible.
I bet the majority of people don't even know that this option exists until they buy it and set it up like me.

The feedback I've received since the box was launched does not support this view.

Youporn is password protected, if it even works at all. So ur children will not get access to it.

How much do u want for the box?

Personally I would prefer to remove it but in lieu of that I would suggest:
    1. Make the menu pin prevent access to menu options (YouPorn no longer visible). At the moment it lets you see all options but prevents access.
    2. Allow user to add web channels to the main/favourite channel lists.

I think we're all aware that it can be pin protected. But it's the name of it showing up in the menu that cannot be prevented that is somewhat annoying. Like I say, why not allow people to get rid of it/hide it.

I have been in communication with Ferguson and pointed out that the use of the term youPorn is unacceptable and explained to them why. I suggested that they change the name to youAdult which is a lot less provocative and more bland/generic in its meaning. Having the ability to select my apps would be my preferred option but this would be a half way house in combination with a password.

They have asked their technicians to look into making the change and I have asked to be kept posted on their progress.

Let's see if we get a result !

Em this may like a simple solution, but why dont you bring it back to the shop where you bought it with the same arguments that you have made over the last few pages of this thread ?

This is a users thread. We don't write the firmware or make the boxes.

You have written to DCENR in the assumption that they can do something about it ? DCENR do not police satellite box manufacturing. They dont even police the certified Saorview products (Teracom do). The Ferguson is not a certified Saorview product anyhow.

I would point out to you that the majority of Ali chip generic combo boxes (Amiko etc) have the same multimedia features including Youporn.

Combo boxes with hardcoded multimedia features may not be for you, if you feel that strongly about it!

Just to mention there has been another firmware update if anyone is planning an upgrade.
New rev is 1.21B6. Not sure what this last digit update means; anyone know?

I'd imagine its a minor revision number with no new features added.

Glad that they're continuing to update. Be nice if they had a changelog somewhere.
All they have on the website is the usual 'updates based on user reports....recommend reformatting disks' etc etc.

Yep its not good for sales. I've made this known to them but not received a positive response.

I'm having an issue where the box doesn't power off after recording something I have scheduled. its in a powered off state before the recording but stays on after it.

Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix?

    thanks.

Interesting that the Ariva 150 is the biggest selling combo, is there a breakdown of the figures for receivers sold? I'd be interested in knowing how unapproved recievers like the 150 sold verses the approved receivers.

How many approved combo boxes are there?

Guys some of you need to edit your posts as you are mixing up Quotes with the wrong comments and posters. Also there is 5 saorview approved combiboxes. http://www.saorview.ie/product/saorview-combi-options/

Any one retailer would have a fair idea of what is selling and what is not.

Certainly Satworld, Electroplus and MSE/Satellite.ie would have an idea of one versus the other given that they sell both approved and unapproved types. One indicator of boxes popularity is when those boxes traditionally sold on the web start appearing in on street retail shops.

Just to let you know I tried out the new firmware 1.21B6 without any problems. The only instantly noticeable change is the channel info bar; the now/next data has changed its appearance very slightly.
I don't see fixes to any of the issues I've had but it's a minor release and not surprising I guess.

Do you mean the firmware? If so it's on the ferguson website. Just make sure to get the correct binary for your box.

Any one have an up to date channel list for the 150? I haven't actually got a 150 I can scan to do up a list? Would be much appreciated. I can scan the terrestrial channels in myself, just mainly the UK channels.

Its in the Recording menu. After recording: Stay On, Switch Off.

I checked that setting and it is set to Switch off. I did a test last night and this morning the box still had REC on it and it was stuck on the channel that was being recorded last night. Needed to power off to get it going again.

I wonder is it the hard disk that I'm using, its an external WD Passport drive, not powered. What type of drives do others use?

    Thanks.

Ferguson do recommend powered drives although I have seen some non powered units work ok.

Does anyone know what the euro symbol, beside the channel names in the new firmware, means?
They also appear as an orange button, I guess you would call it, on the info bar along with things like epg, txt, sub etc etc.
    Thanks.

Does anybody have a channel list for the latest firmware 1.21B6? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭PatchZ

I have an edited (i.e. family friendly) list on the box at home. I'll post it later this evening. Being a reduced list it might not suit.

It doesn't take too much to create your own though and at least then you get all the channels you want. But you do need a PC and a way to get the binary to the PC (USB stick) to make it speedy so maybe not available to all. Their channel editor for the PC is a little flaky but it works.

However, I wish they would get their act together and create a separate channel list from the system settings so we don't have to go through this process every time there is an update. There is no good reason to have to reset the system every time the firmware is updated. In fact, worse than that, they say you should reformat your disk after every update which is plain silly.

I haven't applied the firmware update yet, could I take an export of my current channel list and then import it after I've added the new firmware?

No I don't think so. They don't recommend it. Or rather they recommend resetting the system and starting afresh.
But that said, I was on 1.21B4 and decided to try it on this update because the new version appears to be a very minor update (only on the basis of the version number though which is probably unwise). And it works fine; so far.
The plan this evening is, with a bit of time on my hands, to start again just to be on the safe side.
