competitive eating

I caught an episode of man v food the other day, so has anyone ever entered a competitive eating competition, They come across as pretty disgusting, in fact the whole idea of competitive eating is awfull.

Yeah I know what you mean OP, food is supposed to be enjoyable so I don't see the point in possibly alienating a certain food from yourself by eating too much of it to the point where you become/feel ill

Not competitive eating, but I've tried competitive drinking.

The centurion, is where you attempt to drink 100 shot glasses of beer in 100 mins, one shot every min....

Its harder than it sounds. Gets you completely locked too, ask the Ethiopian taxi driver who's cab I peed myself in, in Sydney after trying it if you don't believe me.

Last time I did the cunturion myself and three work collegues ended up naked on St. Charles Bridge in Prague at about 3 in the morning. Fun times.

I done that in an Irish Hostel in Peru. You're right, not as easy as it sounds. It's a great way to get a party started. Although, see a lad from Roscommon try it with Vodka one night, he didn't last long.

As far as the Man V Food thing goes. Does anyone really need to eat a 6lb burger in an hour?

I was going to call bullsh*t on this until I realised it was beer not spirits.
So 100 35 ml shots is about 7 pints in an hour and forty minutes.... you'd be twisted but it's doable.

The competitive eating thing seems to be a curiously American thing I haven't seen it done in other countries that I've seen only on television.

I have had competitions with friends at Pizza Hut and Pizza Express all you can eat buffets.

I think my record in pizza hut was 14 slices of pizza, 6 peices of garlic bread, a bowl of salad, and 2 bowls of ice cream from the ice cream factory.

Pizza Express had larger heavier slices so the count was slightly lower by one or two.

I detest the way they make competitive eating look like some sort of achievement too with adoring 'fans' cheering on the heroic fat-letes.

I've never heard of it here, or know anybody that has tried it. But I associate it with Americans because thats the only reason I know of it. I just find it repulsive. I feel awful if I eat over just what I can manage, so watching someone gorge themselves is disgusting.

Eating is for body fuel, not a game or to gamble with your health.

Nathans hot dog eating competition in Coney Island NY was won for years by some small Japanese(i think) fella.
But yea it is kind of an American thing

It's an off-shoot of the old competitive circuit in America. It used to be a bunch of independant contets, usually run by radio stations or restaurants as promotional stunts, but they ended up getting a hardcore following of people who would travel around to compete in them all, then it went to a national level of organisation, got syndicated, got tv shows, and now we have stuff that's more relatable for regular folks like Man-vs-Food.

It's pretty big money in America, for companies and professional competitors, the biggest competition afaik is the Nathans hot-dog eating competition. I read a few books on it a while back, it's a pretty weird reflection of their culture with people travelling around to take part in competitions, getting sponsors, etc., and then it ended up on national tv, with competitors trying to get it recognised as a legitimate sport. At least one national league was formed and competitors have to sign to the league to compete.

The greatest competitive eater of all time isn't an American though, he's a Japanese guy called Kobayashi. He had a long standing rivalry with an American guy named Joey Chestnut but I don't think they have had a direct competition in a few years due to Kobayashi refusing to sign the leagues contracts.

It's actually pretty fascinating stuff, but in a weird way, given that you are watching people who essentially get paid to gorge themselves, possibly the most decadant reflection of society possible.

I don't really enjoy going out for dinner with my friends because bar one or two of them, it always feels like competitive eating- except it's who can eat less rather than who can eat more. What's the point of treating yourself to a meal out if you're just going to have lettuce leaves and tomato soup?!

From what I remember the skinnier guys don't purge but they have to be really careful about what they eat outside of competitions and training, especially since they need their stomach to be able to expand to crazy proportions. They have pretty strict training lifestyles at the top level, same as other pro athletes (not saying I consider them real athletes, but they certainly believe they are and live/train accordingly, and their dedication is pretty intense).

The last time I was in Texas I ate at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. It's best known for its 72 ounce steak. The steak is free to anyone who can eat the meal in one hour or less. The meal consists of the steak itself, plus bread roll with butter, baked potato, ranch beans, shrimp cocktail, and salad; otherwise, the meal costs $72.00. Those who have successfully consumed the meal have their names recorded and posted at the restaurant. It was quite interesting.

I won a pizza eating contest once. Ate a 9 (or 11, can't remember) inch pizza in about 2 minutes. Was still starving afterwards, so had a huge sandwich and then home for dinner. Went to bed hungry. Fun day.

When you think about it though it seems a bit strange to make a competition of us people against food as if we have to conquer it, food is our freakin' friend yo, why do we have to fight it?
