I always thought shiitake mushrooms were made out of....well take a guess. I wrote a letter to a magazine who published a shiitake mushroom recipe giving out that they got the name wrong! Took me a few years to realise they are genuine. I cringed. Cringing now. I always wondered why the magazine didn't publish my letter.

The oul lad who played Mickey in Rocky (Burgess Maeredith) also played The Penguin in the 60's Batman tv series.

A friend of mine told me that a couple of years ago. One of those things that I would have never realised myself but was so obvious once i'd been told.

I never knew that I the song "I saw mommy kissing Santa claus" that Santa claus is actually the father...hence the "if daddy had only seen" line...penny has dropped!!

This one got me too. For years I thought it was something different. Perhaps cynically I believed that Santa Claus was the wife's secret lover dressed as Santa and daddy was still up in bed unaware that his wife was getting it on with some guy in a Santa suit.

    There's three possible meanings.

    a) It's daddy dressed as Santa Claus
    b) It's some secret lover dressed as Santa Claus who has snook in on Christmas Eve to bone Mommy
    c) Santa is real and mommy couldn't contain herself when she realised she might have an opportunity to bag the jolly fat man.

Though I know I'm probably wrong I'm sticking with (b) as I like to think of mommy as some sluttish wagon who sleeps around- gives the song a sordid feel when you think about it like that.

    Trivia = tri via
    Latin - Three Roads

In ancient Rome the point at which three roads met. At these locations there would be posted the news and bulletins of what was taking place in the Empire.

Loved when I found that out as it is a great bit of trivia.

Is everyone tone deaf or have you not got an attention span of more than four notes? Or is there an alternative version of BBBS with fewer syllables that goes "Baa baa black sheep have you wool?"

The reason you allow stuff to cool down before putting it in the fridge is so you don't waste electricity cooling it down to room temperature or raise the temperature of the fridge unnecessarily.

I always thought it messed up the food ion some way.

Didn't just realise it but something I remind myself of now-and-again is that what we see in front of us is not us looking out through our eyes as if they are windows. What we see is an image that's projected upside onto our retinas that our brains interpret and correct.

    Too obvious?

That never is just short for "not ever"
Similarly, I discovered not too long ago that "none" is short for "not one" and thus, strictly, it's a singular word, e.g "None of you is as cool or handsome as me."

You wanna sit down for this one

Fortnight is short for fourteen nights!

It's a variation on the original theme (which is from "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman", incidentally).

Anyone watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?

Ridicoulsly catchy song by Julio Inglesias near the end

Only copped this week that Beyond the Sea by Frank Sinatra is actually the exact same song, just English lyrics.
Kevin Spacey did a film with that song title a few years back
