As the title says I am in the process of buying a VW Passat estate. It has the 170 bhp diesel engine. Any thoughts or opinion or what to look out for.

    the actual car is :

You'll need to find out if it's a PD engine, or a CR (Common Rail) engine. We had a couple of 170PD engined Passat's on Fleet (think they were both 06) and both eventually went pop, requiring extensive work. Injector issues, that I believe were sublect to a recall in the UK. Wouldn't take a chance on that personally.

The CR engines are supposed to be a lot better, but I know of a few Skoda's with that engine that have been less than trouble free.

2009 was around the time they changed from PD to CR, so it could be either.

The injectors can now be replaced by VW Ireland on a recall basis. I was looking at one last year and it had all injectors replaced by VW in the service history.
