I entered for the Ultra days after last years race on reading all the excellent race reports. Was unsure if I'd go ahead having struggled to hit my targets for most of last year but have decided to give it a lash.
Now all I have to do is work out a training schedule. Did 14 miler yesterday followed by 20 this morning and weirdly felt wrecked during and after the 14 miles and great during and after the 20 miler this morning:confused:

    Usually around now!

I got a message today that it will sell out soon. If you're serious about it you better sign up pretty soon.

Usually sells out in December. Very odd that it's not sold out yet.

I wonder did Tralee Marathon steal a couple of hundred away from it?
I'd be surprised if the shutters don't go up soon enough though!
Unfortunately I won't make it this year myself as I'm off to Rotterdam for a quick marathon the following week. :(

I've just entered the Connemara marathon, really looking forward to it, looks fantastic.

Just wondering, as I'll be coming down from Newry, where would be best to stay the night before, was thinking Cilfden looks about the handiest, any ideas?

Was looking on the website, they say that where the number pickup/registration hasnt been accounded yet, where have they done this previously?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Qwerty, there's buses provided to/from Clifden and Galway. You could stay in either place, and avail of the courtesy transfers. I'm not 100% sure how they do it now, but when I did the race in 2007, the race packs were posted out a couple of weeks before the race.

I think I saw that they have moved the number pick-up point from the Pillo Hotel just down the road to the Elverys Store in the Headford Road retail centre?

I stayed in Galway City Centre last year and got the shuttle bus out from the Cathedral, which there were plenty of. I took about an hour to get to the start for the Full, and the roads out are pretty poor. A bit of advice is not to sit down the back of the bus, I landed on the man sitting beside me after we went over a massive bump! :D

The registration/pick up was in the Pillo Hotel in Galway last year, I think I read somewhere that they are moving it this year to an Elvery's Shop in a shopping centre on the outskirts of the city.

Doing the Tralee Marathon myself this year so giving this one a miss. I might try the Ultra next year if I stay injury free this year.

Cheers. Yea they arent posted out any more and times & venues havent offically been decided yet, but it sounds likes the registrtaion is going to be in Galway somewhere. I would stay in Galway, don't I dont like the sound of a hour plus trip on the morning of a marathon, even though it has some perks Benny!!

Entered the Tralee marathon too this morning, haven't been to that part of the country, thought it would be a nice way to see it. Looks like a nice course (on a good day maybe), hopefully have the wind on your back on the way back in along the coast.

2nd marathon, have done the half Connemarathon in the past. Am I correct in assuming the second half is the worst of the hills? Also, for any of the regular full-Connemarathonners out there, in your experience how slow is the course? The hills obviously slow you down, but by how much? Normally I'd be aiming for 3.35, what should I be expecting in Connemara?

Just trying to work out a training plan for the Ultra. Haven't really been following a plan to date but have managed to get some good milage in- have done a 20, 21 and 23 mile run over the last 6 weeks alternating with 16 mile LSR's on the weeks in between. Started the back to backs last weekend (14/20) and was wondering whats best- a shorter LSR followed by a longer one the next day or vise versa i.e.

    18 Miles Saturday - 20 Miles Sunday
    or

Hi folks, a couple of quick questions. Are there full road closures for connemara? From what I've seen it is quite a windy route so any advantage will be of benefit. On that note is the course measured on the racing line for a full road closure or only half?
I'm thinking of running part of the course as an out and back route starting near the finish line. Is there parking near maam cross? Would it be safe to run on the road without closures? Thanks

The half course has never been closed to traffic as far as I know. But I'm pretty sure it would have been measured on the proper racing line as traffic is so sparse that you can expect to be able to run the tangents at most corners.

As for safety, I know dozens of people who have run the course in training or at a different event. You're still at your own risk, obviously. You can always park at Maam Cross, except on race day,

    Great Thomas, thanks.

I might try and arrange a boards group lsr in a few weeks if there was interest. Im sure an out and back run would give a good idea of what to expect in april.

There may be a mara 100 club run in the near future on the conn course

Roads are fully closed for the half-marathon course. They're open for the first half of the full marathon though, but it doesn't cause any problems - you'll only meet a handful of cars and runners are mostly single-file after the first mile. From half-way, the course joins the closed roads of the half-marathon route.

Wind could be an issue as most of the course is exposed. Last year it was a mostly calm sunny day, but there was a stiff headwind on the road into Leenane around miles 10-13.

Hmm, okay, but I still saw a couple of cars driving on that road last year (no idea if they were race stewards or locals), plus at least one ambulance.

this will be my second marathon, but done several halfs, including dingle and inisbofin which are some sort of an indication i understand of this.

doing a variation of this plan, http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51231/Marathon-Senior-Training-Program

but stretched it out to 13 weeks by adding weeks at the start, still week one is 20 miles in total.

I swore I'd never venture out to this but never say never.....:D
A small arrival is scheduled for late May so Cork is out of the question, this seems to be the next best option.

Can anyone recommend the best options based on previous experience
    for:
-Spectators (least amount of travel and with shortest time spent out in Maam Cross etc.)
-Where to consider staying the night before as an alternative to Galway city for returning to Dublin (are buses very frequent at race finish?)

I understand there are recommendations on their site but many people here have done this race before.
