My brother and hs fiancée want to have their wedding reception in Cloonacauneen Castle in Claregalway but haven't sourced a church yet. They live abroad so I've offered to help. Looking for a picturesque traditional style catholic church within 30 mins drive of Claregalway if anyone has any suggestions please?

Meelick church.... built in 14th century and is the oldest Catholic church in Ireland. Its in the parish of eyrecourt on the banks of the Shannon and about 35 to 40 mins on the motorway

Cathedral in Tuam? It's about 30 minutes (if even that) from Claregalway. A couple of pics to give you an idea as I don't know what would be regarded as Picturesque
    Traditional...

Castlegar church is a relatively modern style church, certainly not at all picturesque. Also I'm not sure what Fr Reilly's policy is on "outside" weddings.

O.p. I suggest you take a look at the list of parishes on the Galway Diocese & Tuam Archdiocese websites to get an idea of where the churches are, then go visit some.

I've got a map showing the exact location of lots of the Galway area ones - you could start your visits using Streetview, to save some driving.

I know that some of the rural ones are missing from this ... am getting there, but slowly.

(NB I just discovered that this page is not rendering correctly in IE at the moment. I know exactly what the issue is, and hope to remember to fix it tonight. In the meantime, use a more resiliant browser :D )

That said, if the happy couple have family connections with their desired church, it would best to make the approach through those connections. Not all parishes are happy to have their consecrated buildings rented out as pretty venues to outsiders. Just sayin'.

Thanks all for the replies. Mrs OBumble that's a great map, much appreciated :) Will go and do my research and then visit/contact some churches for the happy couple!

you should try Claddagh church. you have the claddagh pier and spanish arch for pics too.
Garrison church in Renmore is beautiful also. Ballyloughane beach nearby for pics & right side of city for heading to cloonacauneen
Right in center of town, def check out the Augustinian, its fabulous!
If you are looking at Churches past Claregalway, there is a lovely church in AbbeyKnockmoy called brooklodge church, about 15mins from claregalway village. you also have the Abbey in Claregalway for pictures enroute to Cloonacauneen.

recently got married married in Lackagh Church, not great looking church on outside but its my parish church and where my parents got married. we just got our pics and everyones been saying they've never seen it look so well. in fact our nicest wedding pics are the ones inside the church! we also used Abbey for pictures, again for sentimental reasons and its just beautiful. can email you some pics if you like.

also can recommend a great florist, photographer, videographer, church singer and make-up artist if you need them! they were all superb!

    happy hunting :)

    Hi!

Me and my Boyfriend are also considering getting married in Cloonacauneen so thanks for getting all that info on the local churches. We liked what we saw there as just want a,laid back bar-b-q wedding really. Would really love any feedback if possible from, anyone who has had their/been at a bar-b-q wedding there-was the food etc ok??the owner seems to have gotten very mixed reports online-I thought she seemed lovely but few people have given out about her on diff forums.

Would really really appreciate any feedback before we go spending a fortune!!thanks a mill x

Maybe also ask that question in the Wedding forum :)
I got married in Cloonacauneen back in 2011, not bbq but 'normal', lamb/salmon type food, and I have to say I absolutely loved it. We had a civil ceremony there, reception, dinner, party - all in the one place. They were always helpful, and accommodating - though sometimes a bit hard to get a hold of. Luckily I live not far from there, so could just pop in randomly.
The food was gorgeous - can't fault it at all.
